MC rounds with 2 participants?

I used to play MC a long time ago, and now I subscribed again, and I see I have only one opponent (dots 5x5)

Is that normal? Or is this a trigger that if nobody signs up for some time it starts?

Odd.  Yes, a bunch of MCs are like that.

I think it might be because of some (new?) cutoff happening at the end of the month based on some undeterminable factors. The system seems to try to hold at least one monthly cup each month even if there are less than 5 players. Similarly, if there have been multiple monthly cups already, it might start the next month "fresh" by starting the last one even if it is short on players.

Strange enough it happened twice in the same (MC dots 5x5 june) : 2 groups of 2 players and when those were finished a final between the two winners..
