Infinity new system rule

Hi, The system of ranking about Infinity has been changed, I wonder if anyone can explain if the number of games or points has a new influence on the score, or ranking. It looks like the player who played the most possible games is advantaged, am i right? So, a new player who register some months after an other player get a chance or not to be higher ranked than the actual number 1 after some games? I hope the old rule of ranking infinity has been kept.

Old system is standard Swiss system based on last N rounds (N is calculated from the number of active players). Order of players was sum of points of N last finished  games (tie-breaking was Bucholz - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchholz_system). Pairing of the same players was prohibited for last N rounds.

Two disadvantages:

  1. I was able create order of players only for active players.
  2. Is advantaged playing lost games as long as possible.
  3. Old games have not influence for your rank in tournament.

I was trying system, where results of older rounds have smaller impact than a new rounds. For example after 5 rounds is score = R1*C*C*C*C + R2*C*C*C + R2*C*C + R2*C + R5 where R1,..R5 is your result in round 1..5, C is some coefficient (for example 0.9). New system has similar mechanism but only a whole numbers are used.

New system is again based on Swiss system, where is the same logic for pairing players. Score is sum of ROUND*RESULT where round is number of round and result is your result. In the tournament table are now all players. Number of games and number of points are only for information.

As an alternative, you could start the next turn as soon as all the games of the previous turn are finished. For longer games a turn could consist of 2 or 3 games instead of one, while for faster games just one. In this way nobody is really advantaged by long games. The good thing of infinity, I think, is how it is immediate: you play your games for the position, without bothering of any other thing. If you win you go up, if you lose you go down.

The new system is good but I think that could soffer by being too obscure and unclear to players.

It seems clear to me, and I like the fact that we don't have to wait the end of the previous turn to play again, they are so many players who don't play...

That's right. It would be great if players would be removed after first time-out. The top player of EWN 50-points tournament gained 100% of points by timeouts! (18 of 18 finished matches)

The situation in 19-points match is similar. Some active players gain randomly free-points by inactives while other actives have to fight for their points. Does that make sense?

Same thing in championships, players in groups with inactives have a better chance to rise up in higher league caused by lower number of opponents in group...

What YHW said is my opinion too. All these games in 50 Point games shouldnt be in the list. Only the games with min. 1000 moves. With these games, the list is not correct. I think this is a special problem for long Point game in 50 may be 19 Point infinity.

I propose to make the system for registering consistent: Like in the monthly cup, each and every sign up should be valid for the single next round only. That is: For just the next championsship, for just the next round in infinity and so on.

What's the consequence of new rating in infinity tournaments in general?:

Matches against SYSTEM as well as other inactive players are always the older results in games with a typical duration of lower than 240h and always the newer ones in games with a longer duration.

The longer the game duration the higher the influence of inactive players if older results should have a smaller impact in rating systyem.

You can see that in EWN infinity tournaments, the rating gets more dominated by time-out players with rising match duration:

11-points match, displayed finished matches:

- 3 matches against SYSTEM (without move, funnily sometimes even won by SYSTEM player!)

- 16 matches finished, but just 4 matches played to end, 12 matches won/lost by time-out!

19-points match, displayed finished matches:

- 4 matches against SYSTEM (without move)

- 14 matches finished, all 14 matches won/lost by time-out!

50-points match, displayed finished matches:

- 4 matches against SYSTEM (without move)

- 17 matches finished, all 17 matches won/lost by time-out!

So, these 58 displayed finished matches in which no one played (except of 4) should be more worthy than ongoing matches which are played? Just because they are 'newer' ?

Indeed, if a player loses a game by time, it should be immediately removed from all infinity tournaments. That's all. There might be one or two started games for that player that remain, but the problem of inactive players would be easily fixed in this way, I think.

Mirko, I wouldn't like that unless there was a simple and obvious UI to reregister for all your infinity tournaments. I don't necessarily notice when the infinity tournament restarts, though I finish my games without timeout.

I do approve of bumping players from infinity when they timeout.

Hi,I don't understand the score system.

It's 90 score each won game. Then when you start another game your score is decreasing with number of points.

Example:win 2 games and start 3rd gameyour score will be:90 (won 1st game) - 88 (started 2nd game) - 178 (won 2nd game) - 174 (started 3rd game)

What's happened when you have over than 90 points? (100 points for example)x (your current score) + 90 - 100 when you start or not another game = x-10

you don't have chance to keep your score?????

game from last round with two moves has bigger impact than game with 400 moves from previous round.

Playing good fight with thousand moves (see go 37x37) never could help to have good score. Because there will start many new rounds during this game.

I propose to include number of moves into formula.

This may be off topic but I don't want to start a new one just because of one question (which may have been asked before). Will the team tournaments ever return or are they gone for good in favor of those Infinity Tournaments?
