Suggestion: Checkerboard background

What about making the background of the game board a checkerboard?

That is alternate tilings of two colours rather than the solid colour background at present?

The game is almost always played on a chess board, and it would make reading the diagonals a lot easier.

Yeah definitely, it seems friendlier and easier on the eyes to have the chess/checkerboard.

I strongly agree with this suggestion. It makes tracking down the diagonals so much easier.
