Where else do you play Amazons?

Well, no posts about Amazons yet, figured I'd start one.

Where else have you played Amazons? I've never played a game outside this site. I assume some of the top players on this site have some previous experience elsewhere.

In the opening I find myself making almost random moves, only when the board starts to develop do actual ideas start forming in my head! :-)

I haven't played a single game of Amazon outside this server. But I really do enjoy it here.

It took some time until I got a feeling for the opening moves, but I still don't have it all figured out yet :)

Amazons can also be played at Richard's PBeM server.

Brainking.com now has Amazons also - in case you are looking for another place to play.

I don't like theboard much at Brainking, find it takes a long time to work out if an area is sealed, the board here 100 times better.

It's Your Turn recently (a few months ago, I think) added Amazons to their list of available games.

So far, the average strength of the players over there is horrible. Many of them have NO CLUE how to play. Not only that, many of them play on until the very last move, when they should have resigned 25 or 30 moves earlier. Finally, the PGN notation isn't accurate at all, ever. The move list doesn't give the starting square of the amazon being moved! It just lists the destination square and then the arrow-landing square. Often times then, the move is ambiguous... meaning more than one amazon could have moved to that square. Thus, the entire PGN file and move-list is absolutely and completely worthless. I've written to them about it, but they don't care. The people who run the site aren't true game-players.

It's funny... they recently added Amazons and Hex... and we've had those games here for years.

At least It's Your Turn has Havannah now, which some people have been hoping they could play on LG for years. Though,if they did introduce Havannah on LG I suspect that the LG players would trash the It's Your Turn players, including me, in under two months :-(

Thanks for the plug, Pedro. BTW, the Vying Games implementation has territory counting, so you don't have to hand count. I just updated it and I think it's pretty accurate.

It counts territories as contiguous blocks of empty squares. If you have at least one queen adjacent to a territory it gives you one point for each empty square. The total is the score that appears next to your username while you play. The score is updated both after moves and after firing an arrow.

I think I'd like to look into dynamically coloring the territories so it becomes even easier to see what's happening in a game.

The Amazons can be played on igGameCenter.com as well.

I organize a Amazons tournament for kids every summer at my thinking games camp. I teach a version that is played on an 8x8 chess board. The kids love the game!
