Twixt commentator down

Public forum discussion.

Twixt commentator is down until I have time to figure out what the hell happened to it.

Thanks for the report. I wonder if LG will stop my clock please, since I no longer know how to play without the commentator :-).

For anyone else who is undergoing withdrawal, the other main twixt analysis tool I know about is "Jtwixt" (findable on google).

I have to get out the actual board again. I know there are other solutions (like using my imagination, but that isn't going to happen)but I don't know what they are. Anybody willing to fill me in?

Dushoff answered while I was typing. Thanks.

It's back. (My router went crazy. Rebooting it fixed the problem. I feared much worse. Backup was overdue, though :-)

Yes, Thank you Alan.

I think it is down again as of May 20 at 9:30 pm PDT

Seems to be up now... I was not aware of any downtime.

It hasn't worked for me for several days. I try to place a move and nothing happens. I tried clearing the cache and cookies, but nothing...

27 May 2013

Ok, I have now tested in Google Chrome on Windows 8, and it works. So, is only Twixt Commentator giving you issues? Is anyone else having Robert Irvin's problems?

#17 · Robert Irvin

27 May 2013

It doesn't work on IE either. Could I be lacking a plug in? I'm not 100% sure I ever used it on this computer...

#18 · Robert Irvin

27 May 2013

Ooh, I fixed it. I had to disable an extension.

#19 · Alan Hensel

27 May 2013

If it's a commonplace extension, please let us know what it is, in case this issue comes up again....

It was called Yontoo. I don't know what it was but probably some sort of malware acquired by my nefarious web browsing activities. I think it was just meant to advertise to me.

There are free anti-malware apps which my computer repair teacher recommends: CCleaner, Malware Bytes, Spybot search and destroy, AVG antivirus, and Avast antivirus. Norton is emphatically not recommended. You might even have to disable Norton or other current antivirus apps which do not work and play well with these apps. The install packages may try to trick you into downloading the trial version and/or install bloatware in addition to the software you want, but such is life on the virtual street these days. Microsoft Security Essentials is another option. In practice, to get rid of some nasty malware, often we back up essential data, reformat the partition, and reinstall Windows.

I have been using Norton forever. (I get the teacher discount) I have not had any problems at all. I use Mozilla Firefox.
Kapersky gave me lots of problems and Microsoft Essentials allowed some viruses to get by as well.

p.s. Please keep Robert Irvin off your web site. He keeps beating me :(

LOL. Thanks for the advice David. If I weren't so lazy I would go ahead and try them BEFORE I have another problem. As it stands, though, I'll be sure to check those out next time I have a problem :-)

I think it is down again at May 16th 12:34 pm Pacific Daylight Time

Man you are quick. It was down for about 20 minutes. Should be back now.

#26 · mtbikesman

If I was a little bit more patient I might win a few more games. :)

Commentator is having another brief planned outage. Hopefully back in less than 15 minutes.

#29 · mtbikesman

18 Jun 2013

Without Alan's commentator I can't beat anyone.
I have no real skill set of my own :-/

Maybe I should take the server down periodically as a training exercise :-)

When I set up that Twixt meeting last year in NYC, I noted that the other players had no experience playing on a 'real' Twixt set; no guide lines, and NO COMMENTATOR. I think this gave me an advantage, for a little while. Then the liquor started kicking in, and I was doomed.

So you're saying liquor greatly aided your opponents?
Hmmm, maybe I could get used to twixt...

I'm worse than you, mtbikesman. I'm too spoiled for the commentator. If I need a virtual board, I use Jtwixt . I can save all the variations I looked at and the conclusions I reached regarding what works and what doesn't. So if someone takes a week to respond, Jtwixt remembers everything for me. I don't have to work the same analysis all over again. And I'm not affected by Alan's evil capriciousness :-)

MisterCat, with an awl, straight edge, clamps, and blue pencil, one could give a 3M set a guide lines tattoo.

I save all my commentator move variations to a PDF file and into a Twixt folder on my desktop. I just keep adding an A, B, C etc to the end of the game#.

David J. Your Twixt set looks like mine. I got mine in the early 70's and I still have it. Then I took a break from playing for 40 years.

I tried to scribe the blue lines but I used an owl instead of an awl. Did not work out so well.

I replaced the pegs with shot glasses; every time I linked, I glugged one down. Hurt my game a bit; helped others by default. (I know - excuses, excuses).

I'd rather play live Twixt without guide lines, as I think it exercises my spacial perception skills more, though I admit that I choose the board with guide lines here at this site. Also, no commentator in a live game forces more concentration; again, a useful exercise. Here, I use commentator like everyone else (presumably?). Alas - opportunities to play live opponents are extremely few and far between.

When I was living in Brunswick, GA i played occasionally at Starbucks in a chess (club? more of an informal get together which included my math professor). One of the guys there had a twixt board and I was always able to get revenge on him for beating me so badly in chess. Other than him though, no one I've met has ever heard of this game. Very sad...

Before Alan's commentator was available I either worked out moves on my old 3M board, which was tedious or on an Autocad drawing of a board that I had made. The undo and redo functions in Autocad made this fairly quick and I could save variations but it was still tedious and I had to do a lot of clearing away of old files so that my hard drive didn't get completely filled up. I would never have the time to complete the games in a championship tournament without the commentator. It is a godsend, so, thank you Alan for putting together a program that I certainly do not have the skill to put together myself.

I wish I could find someone local to play Twixt with but nobody seems to have the patience or time to learn.

I just put the cardinal lines on my board with a straight edge and a pencil so that I can get rid of them if I ever find a purist to play with who wants them gone. No owl or awl needed.

twixt-commentator is down again, it seems, and has been for a couple of weeks:

"We're sorry, but it seems that this DynDNS hostname has been deactivated."

PS: Jtwixt and "importing from window" works, given minor text-string formatting.
