Status of HexWiki?

Public forum discussion.

HexWiki.org has been down for a while. In another thread someone suggested the possibility of retrieving all of the rendered HTML pages from archive.org. I was thinking of doing that, but before starting I wanted to make sure that there is not an easier, more direct way.

Do the maintainers of HexWiki have a backup of the underlying database? Do they have any other sort of backup?

I scraped a copy of HexWiki from archive.org last night. I'll clean up the markups and bring up a mirror site soon.

IF you can do that Z, it will definitely be something to be Thankful for this day!

That is so wonderful z! I was so sad that it had been lost.

Sorry to dig up an old thread - I'm new to Hex, and in trying to find more information on the concepts involved, and how to improve my game, I was sad to find out that Hexwiki went defunct (after database issues?) but was then resurrected (hooray to z!) but only in read-only mode.  I feel kind of like I did when I really got into the Beatles - excited, and at the same time sad knowing that they had broken up so long ago.

What would be involved in getting Hexwiki back into a user-editable state?  I'm savvy enough to offer my technical assistance (and time) to try to get the site operational again.  There are so many interesting discussions in the Hex forum, that I would love to see expanded on, with diagrams and explanations.

I'm also willing to help.  We could use a script to convert the HTML pages back to Wiki markup, then set up a wiki and place the markup there.  The hardest part, it seems to me, will be getting the rendering of the board images to work again; this was probably done with custom code.

I will try to get in touch with the people who ran hexwiki.org; maybe they would like to help.

Well, it went read-only some time ago.  Likely this was after this happened: http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/forum/topic2.jsp?forum=50&topic=536 but "I just got here" and am piecing things together from what I have been able to google.  The previous site admin "Alan Turing" stated he wasn't active here, but I assume that it is possible to contact him and find out if he still has the old collateral, and if he is willing to allow someone to try and start it up again.

The HexWiki mirror on trmph is missing a lot of pages.  There are lots of terms in red that were links to pages in the original, but which are missing in the archive (sadly).

A quick update: scrampy and I are hard at work building a new wiki.  It should be presentable in a week or two.

@TomAce: Are you sure the missing pages were present in the original?  Frequently in wikis one creates links to not-yet-existing pages, hoping that someone will come along later and create the pages.

@Ignatius:  You're right, there were links to not-yet-written pages.  There was one page I was sure was in the original wiki that I couldn't find in the mirror--the Tom's move page--but I see that it's in the mirror now (and links to it are fixed--thanks to those who did this).

Tommah: I am super-excited to hear that people are working on a re-vamped Hex wiki. Last week I taught a John Nash memorial math camp, and the kids really wanted to know more about Hex. There isn't much strategic stuff available right now, so every bit helps!
