There should be some heuristics, that anyone capable of beating a bot should be assumed to be capable of (which means even 15xx's like me - so heuristics like filling in the other hex that makes a connection when the bot plays in one of the gaps in a single weakly connected pair). If playing against only those heuristics leads to a loss, then resign. Add more heuristics if your opponent is more highly rated.

Or whoever runs the bots could just organise a private message to be sent to himself when the bot notices it's hopeless, and then he can manually step in and play the resigning move. Way less effort than expecting the opponent to play the 20 remaining connecting moves.

Heh, way less effort for whom? Anyway one might as well agree that Hot Sync Karen takes too long, for all the good it will do us :-)

@Mirko Rahn: I mean that people recognise other people's thinking patterns so they may try to manipulate opponents or play moves that are likely to be desorientating (trying to change a clear win into a mess).
A machine cannot do it (unless it does it by chance) because this requires a 'psychological' approach. I don't think that a bot can differ a messy position from a clear position.
