He's unable to understand what state the board is in in one of his *unrated* games. What should I do?
1) play a (random) move for him
2) resign for him
3) have him time out whilst he waits for me to fix the bug
4) ask his opponent what he'd prefer me to do
?
2 seems the least controversial, but the most dumb - as it's unrated I presume the opponent wanted to play a game for enjoyment/practice rather than for victory.

I. Does he realize that he doesn't understand? If so, have him play a random move when he recognizes the condition.
II. If not, what is the symptom?
A) Infinite loop? Play random move when CPU cycles (perhaps as proxied by wall time) exceed a threshold.
B) Crash? Play random move from recovery routine, if there is one.
C) Dumb move selection? Heh, heh.

Oh, wait a minute. Do you mean he can't parse the list of moves of the game so far? In that case, he won't be able to select a random legal move. Hmmm.

He calls an external program which just returns an error. He realises he doesn't know what move to play, and does nothing. Every 7 seconds :-(
I made a tiny tweak to the external program so that it returns what's probably a random suggestion in the particular instance he was encountering (a dumbell with a branch in the middle of the bar). This is suboptimal, as I'd like to use that program to analyse different types of theoretical positions, and don't like the idea that it's now possibly wrong.
At least he's now moving, but not necessarily correctly.

I guess the main part of my original question was "how much intervention should I as a sentient d&b-playing human have when he gets stuck and I *can't* fix his bug?" I was lucky this time in that I found a quick-but-dodgy fix.

A C4-(L4-C11-L4) in a 7x7.
[game;id:1509720;move:60]
Presumably one always opens the side branch first, it gets double-crossed, then the bar, which gets taken in full, and what's left is worthless?
