Is this a black hole? :-)

Wat does 1 mean?
14 Apr 2012
1 is the number that comes after zero and before two.
(yes, this is the black hole, and it resurfaces every eight years or so)

Interesting that it took 7 and a half years to answer the question, "what does 1 mean?"
It is a complex question that requires great pondering, to be sure!!
Here is my take on the issue...
.99999999999999999repeating equals one.....here are two proofs:
proof #1) 1 divided by 9=.1 repeating, 2 divided by 9 equals .2 repeating etc etc and 9 divided by 9 equals .9 repeating and it also equals one!
proof #2) between any two real numbers there must exit another real number. There is no real number possible between .9 repeating and one.

proof 3) Let x = 0.999999...repeating
10x - x = 9x
9.999... - 0.999... = 9.0
9x = 9.0, thus x = 1.0, thus 0.999... = 1.0

It's no more contradictory than saying that ½ = 2/4; it's just that the concepts involve (limits) are more complicated. 3, 3.1, 3.14, 3.141, 3.1415, . . . 123/100 = 1.23:
Which is 1?
My point is that it doesn't rely on that fact before it proves it, as the original proof appears to. No matter how many 9s you put at the end of the "infinite" decimal if you multiply it by 9 you will get a number less than 9. =which is one.
1 = 0.99999999999999999 (repeating)
Which is 1.

In GO. A difference of 50 rating points is translated to a 1k difference, with a possible exception for the difference between 1k and 1d.

@Doctor_Strange: Nice.
I have one more, surreal, definition:
1 is the simplest number that is bigger than zero.
18 Apr 2012
It takes Russell 11 chapters to define 1

@yper: 1 is the only single digit positive number in binary
18 Apr 2012
@MRFvR: Nice, although kind of self-referential. Single digit means 1-digit. And binary stands for base-2.
18 Apr 2012
@yper - Ok, I give you 'self-referential'. Actually, that would probably not the way I would define 1 but I just read the "10 types of people" joke on FB and wanted to do something with binaries...

1 is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.
Hmm. Maybe this belongs in the word association thread. Sorry....

2 was a mistake, after that there was no stopping those integers.

11 is a crowd (in binary)

100 is a square (in almost all bases)
19 Apr 2012
Almost?

Yes. Counter-example: factorial number system

Depending on definition, 100 stands for either two (see the Wikipedia link) or six (see the sequence A007623 in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences)
