i just joined a tournament when do i know if its started is it automatic

Yes. You will see games appear in your "My Games" list. In some of the games you will be making the first move, while in others your opponent will have made the first move. Once the games begin to appear in your list, you will have links you can use both for the individual games and to see how the tournament, as a whole, is progressing.
