FAQ means FREQUENTLY asked questions.
The Son Question is the most asked question in the forum...
(by the way, it's the sum of the product of the points earned in a game with the score of your opponent in this game) Looked at a finished tournament and see if you can make sense of this... (if you win 2-0 against a player with 6 points in the tounrament i contributes 12 to your SON; if that player gets 2 points more, you get 4 more in your son)

OK, now for the related question, where does the name "son" come from for this value?

I think it is short for Sonnenberger.

Complete "Sonneborn-Berger-Wertung". "Wertung" is "scoring system". Berger was a strong chess player in Berlin in the 19th century and more well known as author and editor of the "Berger", an endgame book, the state of the art till Euwe and Cheron came out with their endgame books.

Thanks!
My Googling skills are still lacking, because my initial search found nothing useful, and mostly all in German (so if it was useful, I couldn't read it)
With this additional information I found more information here: http://senseis.xmp.net/?SonnebornBerger
