I will attempt to draw a relationship between the possible evolution of cyborgs and the bigger picture rules of nature and evolution
Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells without a master control. This uncontrolled growth is the opposite of life, which has evolved great order to enable it to function. When a systems justs starts to go without control it often signals the end of life for that organism.
There are 2 areas that I see with similar dynamics today: 1) The earth in general, with various governments, corporations, idealogies & of course technologies moving very fast. 2) Our "cyborg" relationship with technology & computers.
It is important to look at nature, because although we are playing god and recreating ourselves, the basic BIG rules of the game may not have changed. There may need to be some form of control, or global nervous and immune system in place to control the whole gaia organism, or pockets of rapid growth (technoterrorists).
Our current system of control, a semi-transparent democracy using free market economies & freedom of trade should be looked at to see if they comply with natural evolved systems or are they completely un-natural. There also needs to be 100% compliance, imagine if your foot deceided it did not want to be controlled by you. Right now, if earth were a organism, it would be moving in many different directions at once, and defacating in its own bed.
As I think the Nano people are finding, there are a lot of good nano ideas in nature to emulate with MEMS (ATP motors, ion pumps etc.), there are probably good ideas to emulate from natural systems as well.
So yes, i agree that we must start engineering or choosing how our interaction should be with the machines now. Let biological evolutionists take a crack at it rather than business people, politicians & engineers.

Yes!
Perhaps we must all take crack at it, all of us who realize the danger (of imminent singularity).

Perhaps the essence of intelligence is the ability to make mental connections leading to a global, comprehensive, and adequate model of reality upon which appropriate and effective action can be taken towards making the right evolution set of laws for creating on a laboratory climate the demmand Cyborgs AI Seed. The most effective way to control people is to define the games they will play-- including the cognitive games by which they experience the world and themselves. My own point of view is that, I think many sciences are contemplating the human eye or maybe the vertebrate eye for the missing link, I don't think so... , "they are looking in the wrong place". , [I believe that AI seed is located in the back yard of their own laboratories], to be exact in the Vegetable & Plants Kingdom, by design a model of a human eye thru DNA engineering programs that will replicas the eyeball structures. In addition, connect optical fiber mini-networks to it, with silicones substances as applicable, with the correct frequency-input microchip communicators making this a giant eye prototype to accommodate all artificial neurons or viceversa; sufficient software and hardware that will maintain micro cyborg enzymes’ cells intact. Structurally and functionally, one of the best understood neural assemblies is the retina of the vertebrate eye. Happily, similar operations have been developed for robot vision, handing us a rough conversion factor. The retina is a transparent, paper-thin layer of nerve tissue at the back of the eyeball on which the eye's lens projects an image of the world. It is connected by the optic nerve, a million-fiber cable, to regions deep in the brain. It is a part of the brain convenient for study, even in living animals because of its peripheral location and because its function is straightforward compared with the brain's other mysteries. A human retina is less than a centimeter square and a half-millimeter thick. It has about 100 million neurons, of five distinct kinds. Light-sensitive cells feed wide spanning horizontal cells and narrower bipolar cells, which are interconnected by whose outgoing fibers bundle to form the optic nerve. Each of the million ganglion-cell axons carries signals from a amacrine cells, and finally ganglion cells, particular patch of image, indicating light intensity differences over space or time: a million edge and motion detections. Overall, the retina seems to process about ten one-million-point images per second. It takes robot vision programs about 100 computer instructions to derive single edge or motion detections from comparable video images. 100 million instructions are needed to do a million detections, and 1,000 MIPS to repeat them ten times per second to match the retina. The arrow of awareness points through the lens of mind, which has its own focussing and distorting properties and is normally perceived as transparent-- that is, not perceived at all. It is possible to look at the lens of mind-- for it to be an object of awareness or thought-- provided we understand that what we think we are seeing as the lens is itself a product of the lens, a mere image. In other words, the lens can be known only through inference from its distorting effects upon experience. It is better regarded as a theoretical construct rather than a literal object of perception. (We are speaking not of the brain, which is a physical object, but of the mind, which is not). An analogy might be the black hole which acts as a gravitational lens. It cannot itself be seen, but produces visible effects on the background of more distant objects whose images are distorted or multiply refracted around it. To manipulate or obstruct the information flow of this modelling process is to control or limit the behavior arising from it. Disinformation is communication given out to control the model-- either by creating a distorted image in the subject's mind or by flooding the communication channel with irrelevant information. Facts are disarmed, or become outright lies, when isolated from their proper context, history, or unity with other facts in a total picture. When the highest peaks are covered, there will be machines than can interact as intelligently as any human on any subject. The presence of minds in machines will then become self-evident.

It is now impossible to deny the close coevolution that exists between human beings and technologies. We exist and evolve with them and through them. To reflect upon technoculture is thus not simply to think about the impact of technologies on our world, but is, in fact, to examine the emergence of new strata of reality, where living beings, phenomena, and machines become entangled. Now more than ever, by the instability and multiplicity of worlds that they help us to discover, sometimes within our own bodies (by the fact that they insert themselves in the most fundamental perception of what we are), machines must be perceived as an integral part of any ontological inquiry. It is no longer possible to ask questions about God, nature, life, or death without taking into consideration the essential contribution made by machines. Any perception that we can have of the phenomena that shape us and that give us life, all that we perceive ourselves to be, all that we understand of the world that surrounds us – all of our representations – depend to a great extent upon machines. Within our current perception of the universe, there no longer exists a natural order without machines. This is the technological reality. At levels which surpass our senses, the universe does not belong to us, it belongs to machines... At these levels, all readings of the world that we perform depend upon the machines which are our messengers. At these levels, machines are shamans, penetrating forbidden times and spaces and bringing back troubling, worrying, spellbinding, and often premonitory narrations which directly affect what we are and what we imagine ourselves to be.
