There are lots of online gaming sites. Try following this link for a list:

GoldToken.com, Pocket Monkey, and Big Red Pawn. Gameknot has a lot of good chess players, but be prepared for long lead in times and an iron fisted webmaster that changes his own rules at his own whim.

Of course, Chessclub.com is the gold standard chess site. At any given time it will have several grandmasters playing (which you can watch) some rank beginners and everybody inbetween, a lot of players in the A and B and C rankings. You can check it out for free and to become member is $50 per year but its well worth it (did I hear LG only asks $20 per year?)

chessclub

itsyourturn.com has chess and a lot of nice variants. (including one where one player starts with only pawns; if I remember well)

thank you to those who have replied...i am familiar with many of those sites mentioned... find itsyourturn.com the best, especially the graphics, but they limit the number of games to nonmenbers. although membership is not very expensive, about 30 us$. the other sites seem confusing...i'll stick to this for the time being...

thank you all again...
