What about 'dots and boxes'? Also a connection game, with very simple rules. Should also be very easy to implement.

David, much as I like TwixT, I hope you mean _replacing_ TwixtPP (and presumably retain the PP ratings).

Jan, (or Taz, if you prefer),

On your web site you imply that you've solved Neutreeko -- meaning that for any given position you can determine who is winning and likely know the best next move. And if you don't have such a table, you could develop one using existin inexpensive technology.

Doesn't that make the game inappropriate for a turn-based server, where (using correspondance chess rules) lookup-tables are legal, even though search-andevaluation engines are not? Anyone with sucah a tablebase could play perfectly, which whould make the cahmpionships quite dull.

so lets implement tic-tac-toe.

You are right, it is easy to cheat. It is also easy to cheat in Othello (or Reversi as it is called here) by downloading the program WZebra. I have already realized that Neutreeko is not suitable for serious live championships since it would more or less turn into a competition of memorizing opening lines. It is not that bad in Othello yet, although some may feel the standard size should be increased to 10x10 for this reason. I don't suspect any of the Othello players here for cheating though, and I might hope that Neutreeko could also be a game that people would play for fun without using software. It would of course be legal to analyze a match after you finish it (as people do in between rounds in live Othello tournaments).

That being said, I don't see how the fact that Neutreeko is solved would be an argument for introducing tic-tac-toe instead, which is far easier to solve. I don't think that a decent hex player such as yourself can seriously be interested in it. ;-)

I think we need better consensus on what constitutes cheating. In correspondance chess, using a table-base of known endgame positions, and an electronically searchable database of other positions, is considered legal. But using a program which does a fresh search of positions starting from the current position on the board, are not. That works fairly well in chess. It works less well in other games (such as GWG, in my opinion). In Neutreeko, it would be completely destructive.

Yes...presumably one could make these tables illegal in Neutreeko even though they are legal in Chess?

in tic-tac-toe there is no need to cheat so isnt it a perfect game for turn based server?;)

#18 · oyamaneko

Tic-Tac-Toe is absolutely no game for this server. It's childish, has no tactical depth and always ends in a draw if both players have little ability in tactical thinking.

Why implementing a game that always ends as a draw?

How about Rock-Paper-Scissors? That would be a very interesting addition.

#20 · Alan Turing

21 Oct 2003

In that case, I vote for rock-paper-scissors-spock-lizard, a slightly more complex game on the same principles.

#21 · Taral

21 Oct 2003

I disagree. The two additional options make the game more complicated, while adding little to the depth of the game. Besides, it is better to choose a game which is known and played all over the world (such as rock-paper-scissors) than a spin-off with only a few followers (such as rock-paper-scissors-spock-lizard).

And what's a spock?

#22 · na_wspak

21 Oct 2003

i think tic-tac-toe is better because u should only know all combinations if u would like to be the best (actually to be in majority -about 99,99%- the rest is traveliing through time while playing) and not to lose. in rock-paper-scissors or invented by turing rock-paper-scissors-spock-lizard (btw what would be exact rules of your game turing?) even if u know all possibilities u cant be sure u won't lose so it's quite unfair game.

tic-tac-toe is even better than hex in some cases.

1. u can "almost" infinitely more easily draw

2. there would be hardly any loser so almost noone would be sad, angry or disapointed that (s)he has lost

3. its much easier to learn

4. its much easier to implement on the site

5. u dont have to use jtic-tac-toe to go into deeper analysing (unless u're not traveling through time but then it wouldnt help much)

6. etc

Rules for rock-paper-scissors-spock-lizard can be found here. There is also a continuous version, in which the two players select numbers between 0 and 1. If your opponent has selected x, you win if your number is either smaller than x - 1/2 or in the range (x, x + 1/2).

#24 · na_wspak

21 Oct 2003

thx. i thought this game is only in turing's head:)

#25 · Alan Turing

21 Oct 2003

it is only in my head, at least if one subscribes to the solipsistic view of reality. but why would you do that, dear figment of my imagination?

buhahaha!

#27 · Alan Turing

21 Oct 2003

now you know how i feel when josef louis villafan says something. :) i've sent you a little lookup table via the messaging system.

#30 · LZJ

22 Oct 2003

How you show in game spock and lizard? I haven't understood that images?

Isn't there easier cheating than at classical rock-scissors-paper?

#31 · oyamaneko

23 Oct 2003

Come on! What are we talking about here? We need no child's games here. If you vote for new games, they should have a tactical and strategical like go and chess. If rock-paper-scissors is added here we could also add "search the little blue doggy".

Sometimes a simple child game yields very complex insights.

I know i'm falling into repetition but 'Dots and Boxes' is the perfect example of such a childgame...
