I notice registrants for all the monthlies and rating tourneys have been piling up lately. I hope the jam breaks soon. There will be quite a flood of new tourneys, when it does...

This happens from tie to time when the agent that starts tournaments gets into trouble.
I am sure Richard will sort this out as soon as he is online again.

How close in ratings do players have to be for "rating tournament" to combine into a section and start the tournament?

They must be in the same 200-point block. For example, players rated 1400-1599 form one class, those rated 1600-1799 form another. Players at the very top (and, I guess, the very bottom) of the rating lists may be placed in the adjacent class if there aren't enough players in their own. In Go, 4 levels is equivalent to 200 points.

Thanks for the info, seems to be a good system. 200 points or less offers reasonable chances to the lower rated player.

Just want to add that the system is not that good for the very best players (like David in Hex) who ends up alone in one block. How does the system handle this? Is he put in a lower block?

That's what I said.
