How do I post a picture to my profile?

Hi Taylor,

Go to Login/New User...Click on 'edit user profile'...in the 'More Info' field, use html to make an image on the internet show up on your profile.

Thanks. I have every game here represented but one (Little Golem's Word Game) and I should be putting something together for that one very soon.

Clicking on each photo brings up a larger image in a new window. Beware! Most of these lareger files are HUGE. Unless you have a very fast connection, I don't recommend it.

(Obviously, I'm still having fun with my new digital camera.)

Hi Ed, really marvelous those pictures!

I wonder although, what kind of game the 3rd one may be?

Twixt, of course, is correct. A "better" view of what the game looks like can be found here:

http://www.abstractstrategy.com/twixt.jpg

However, it was my intention to get in with the camera as close as possible. Keen observers will probably note the 3M box is in the background of my image.

Upon looking at your profile, I can see why you didn't know what game it was... you don't play Twixt!

Hi Ed,

*Where* did you get a hex board? I didn't think they made them. Is it homemade?

Thanks,

Rex

According to abstractstrategy.com, Parker Brothers published the game in 1950.

Yes, the hex board you see in that photo is homemade. I've made a few of them. I sold that one on eBay a year or so ago. I can provide a better pic or two of it if you're interested in seeing what it looked like. It's a little nicer playing on a wood board than playing on a mat. However, I wouldn't go as far to say these wood boards of mine are professional quality!

I'm currently making another board since I sold the last one I had. This one I plan on keeping for myself, but I will probably make another one after that.

Ed, your photos are professional quality, as is your Hex set! I feel embarrassed offering photos of my rinky-dink sets, but Twixt and Hex shots are available on the BoardGameGeek website. One of these days maybe I'll get a Felsberger Twixt set, and then I can post a nicer photo of it than you see here (scroll down the page to see the set.) BTW Ed, I recommend your next Hex set be 19x19 :-)

Ed, it would be great to see more detail. I made a pretty nice go board, but have balked at a hex board because I thought it would be tough to draw the hexes. I was thinking instead of the hex mats, like the ones David linked to on BGG.

But like you say, a wooden board would be so much nicer than a mat...

Hey David, if I *do* make a hex board, do you think I'd be OK with a 13x13 one? I'm still very weak at the game and find this size challenging, and anyone I'd play it with would be a beginner.

Thanks,

Rex

Rex,

Here's a couple of other photos of two different hex boards, both of which I no longer own:

David,

If I recall, my 11 by 11 board sold (on eBay) for more than my 16 by 16 board! I recall being VERY disappointed in that, since this was not cost effective at all! But yes, having a 19 by 19 board would be cool. And thanks for the links to the photos, but as a big abstract games fan, I have indeed seen them before!

Awesome, Ed. Looks like 1/4-inch plywood, but where did you get the hexes? (And the booklet?)

If we could find bordered hexes, I wonder if it would be easier to jam them all together instead of trying to separate them by a set distance.

Intrigued,

Rex

A friend of mine cut the hexes for me. However, they weren't PERFECTLY cut, which was much more evident if you placed all of the hexes right up against each other. Thus, it looked MUCH better to leave a small gab between each of them.

Oh, and I made/put together the booklet myself. I offered it as a "bonus" when I sold the game on eBay. I talked about the history of hex, listed the rules, gave a sample game, and mentioned a variation or two.

I just found this thread a few minutes ago. Kudos to Ed of course, and now you have me as well salivating for a wooden Hex set of my own.

Imagine the market and the economic opportunities for such sets here on lg!

There's one thing I don't understand. On Ed's profile, where are the small sample images located? Were they attached to an email to Richard, which he then placed on the LG website? If so, what directory are they in? Or are the small images on Ed's website? My Geocities website won't allow an image on their site to appear on someone else's page.

In the meantime, here is an alternate approach for a quality wood set: a grid of triangles instead of hexagons, with stones on the intersections as in Go. I made the 3-d image with the freeware POV-Ray. I modified the source code for a Go board display. It doesn't look quite right just yet; the black stones in the bowl are a little hokey, but I will fix it up later. The position is from my PBMserv game 859 with Tim Shih.

Hey David! I really like that 3D image! I'm not familiar with POV-Ray but it sounds like it's worth the download.

I think it would take me many games before I became accustomed to playing hex on the points of triangles, rather than in the center of hexagons.

Yes, the images are on my personal website and I'm simply linking to them.

My profile now has Twixt and Hex images. Now that I paid for a website, I suppose I should put a website there...
