VAT on donations

When I agreed to pay US $20 to Littlegolem, I found that I was charged a total of US $23.50. The extra $3.50 is VAT ("Value Added Tax").

I am in the UK, and expect to have to pay VAT on goods and services. But I am not paying Littlegolem for a service. Use of the service is free. I am making a gift, and I believe that VAT is not charged on gifts.

Dig out your mom's old albums, find the "Beatles 'Taxman'" cut, add a new line about donations.
