Many pages;

1)wordlist.sourceforge.net

2)www.puzzlers.org/secure/wordlists/dictinfo.html

are a couple, or search for Enable word list from your browser.

Just so I can be clear what I'm competing against...are most players just sitting there with a copy of the list of legal words, looking until they find one that matches, or are people "supposed" to be finding words out of their head? I don't want to get beat when I had no real chance...

Also, is GUTTERY a word? :-/

The brain is a marvelous thing. It invented paper so it could write notes, and those notes became a dictionary, and the dictionary became the enable word list. Use your brain and all its assets.

Well, I don't really agree, but oh well. I saw it as a test of a combination of the player's own vocabulary and their pattern recognition skills. Obviously, it's just a pattern recognition game. Scrabble players don't get to pre-check their words against a word list. Still, if that's how it's being played, I'd rather have my scores reflect that we're all playing the same game, rather than me tying one hand behind my back.

webtv users like using their brain and its confusing sometimes to bounce back and forth between word enable and golems word game ... their scores prove it to an extent

You can play the game either way, with the word list or without, depends if you are concerned about getting high rankings or playing for fun.

Well, I think the ENABLE word list is a joke. AE? OE? RAIA? WIFING? WHOSIS? CLIVERS? It doesn't take long to realize that this doesn't much resemble a list of accepted English words. The result is that you get whipped by some 1800 rated person using words that aren't even English. Hell, if I had access to UNIX so I could do a regexp search of the wordlist, I'll bet I could find RAIA, too. Is this a word game or a brute force list searching exercise?

I have played 100's of GWG games without a word list. I didn't even know one existed......and I intend to keep playing with my brain. It's the fun way to do it. I think we should all just use our brain for this game..

Agreed. Abbey makes a valid point. If everyone played by using the word list, it would not be a game of player versus player, but word-list-searcher versus word-list-searcher.

I am afraid it would be not a game between player vs player, but native english-speaker vs native english- speaker...

Randy I agree with u....I have to wonder how well some would do not using word list....

Maybe you should try to play a game vs Tore without the use of a wordlist, just ask him...it would need to be a game in Norwegian ofcourse...

I have no problem what so ever with people using wordlists, if it was forbidden, the game would only be suitable for native english people.

I don't think it would be any fun using a word list or dictionary.

And what is with using computer programs to play?? That makes no sense at all!

I'm not a native English speaker nor I am too good at it, but good enough to play GWG and enjoy it. A tried ti play diffenerent ways.

1) Using only LG built-in dictionary - means when was in doubts I tried to submit word I was unsure about. And wait whether LG took it.

2) Simply searching wordlist. If I was unsure I tried find words (or parts) in wordlist prior to submitting to LG.

3) Systematically searched pattenrs using specialized wordlist searching tool. This could find word begining with something, ending with st. ot with some squence in the middle.

And results?

1) is much slower than 2) or 3).

2) gets very little better score than 1), 3) gets more better score but difference wasn't so high. Tool sometimes found strange words I didn't know before but more often this searching help me to find more common words known to me which I hadn't notice.

With 3) I was able to beat GWG_robot with 1) (and little help 2) I wasn't.

My big problems is that I know many words in different languages (latin, grekk, french, japan, czech, etc...) but I don't know exactly what forms of them are used in English or which are considered English because they are used by English speaking people as are.

And one example (once noticed before): At one version of oficial Hasbro's web dictionary are considered words "negro" and "blanco" as English and at another version (US?) aren't.

Opening worldlist in Notepad and searching for "negro" can be faster than trying to type it to LG if you don't know whether "negro" is English word also at LG.
