according to the Tournaments page, in championship tournaments, the players who placed first and second in a tournament advance to the next round. is this still true? i just placed second in a go tournament and was wondering if i will advance to the next round.

Yes, it's still true. The top 2 from each section (other Section 1, of course) advance. Sometimes others may advance, because dropouts could otherwise reduce a sections size below 9.

i was looking at the various leagues on the tournaments page and i still don't get it. the page shows a list of leagues with a few groups of nine players each. where are the tournaments where the top two winners of the first round of each tournament play each other in the next stage of the tournament? is this how it works? what are the various leagues for?

You've misunderstood it: You don't advance to a second round. What happens, is you get to play in a higher league next championship. So let's say you finished second in the third league. Next time a championship starts, you will be playing in the second league.

got it. so is the overall winner of the tournament always someone from League 1?

Well, I guess you could say so. But I rather think of it as if you are competing only with the people in your own leage. So, you can WIN your own league. It's like soccer. Some teams compete in the 1st league, others in the 2nd. A team can win it's league, but talking about an "overall winner" is not very meaningful, although it's obviously "better" to win the 1st than the 2nd league, as you will have faced much tougher resistance. But this is only my personal opinion....
