Security concerns: Receive new password securely? Don't provide all users with my info?

I am grateful for this server, and I doubt there is incentive for anyone to mess with me here. I also thought the same about other aspects of my life, and discovered I was wrong. Is there any chance that security could tighten up here? Thanks for your time.

I'd also greatly appreciate standard practices regarding passwords on here--the ability to set our own, for example (Am I remembering wrong that we used to be able to set our own?). I also really hope they're not being stored somewhere in plaintext, which I mention just in case as that unfortunately seems to happen even in the year 2025.
