I was wanting to play a game with a couple friends of mine that required a hex board so I was wandering around Lowe's looking for ideas and came across something that I thought was pretty awesome. I've used tile in the past, but it never came out great due to the gaps. I stumbled upon peel-n-stick tiles which have no gaps and are the perfect size for several popular games. I was able to make a hex-5 board from a single sheet, and one sheet can also be cut to make a nice Chase board (an odd game but fun). Thought I'd share some pics. I was pretty excited. I mounted them onto a 1' x 1' vinyl floor tile. It worked really well, as the board has some heft, the tile stick to it great, and it doesn't slide much on a table.
