another game site

Nothing wrong with this one, of course.
While downloading a free piece of Chess software, I noticed that the creator has a game playing site similar to this one. From what I can see, it is not as big, not as old, probably fewer players, and doesn't have all the same games; no Twixt, for example. But is has a bunch of games, including some that are not here, such as Backgammon (which will never be here, since there are dice involved). Chess is there, and here is the list:

Backgammon, Brandubh, Breakthrough, Chess, Go, Havannah, Hex, JadeJack, Kauri, Margo, Merels, Onyx, Othello, Pente, Tablut, Tawlbwrdd, Toguz Kumalak, Unlur, Y.

The site is turn based, just like this one. I like that. Personally I don't like to be stuck sitting at a computer playing a live game. Also, the site is free, just like this one, but will graciously accept donations. That's all I can tell you for now, since I just joined the thing. Here it is:

Trying to start a new Hex or Havannah game there, I see no way to specify the grid size, nor whether to implement the pie rule or not. Their rules page for Havannah mentions the pie rule COULD be used but does not say HOW this would be done. This is too much ambiguity to suit me. If the admin responds to my query, I might regain interest.

Ooh, I've never played a number of those! I share your preference for turn-based games in general, partly from growing up with an unreliable and glacially slow internet connection. It looks like there are... just under 80 users total, and under 800 games. That is pretty small. Thanks for sharing!

I may have missed (or forgotten) earlier discussion, but why do dice prevent Backgammon from being implemented here? EWN and StreetSoccer use a single die, and Oceans 11 and the word games involve a level of chance that I'd think is more involved to implement than a pair of dice would be.

Well, if my understanding is wrong, then I can stand corrected. But my understanding (sorry for the redundancy) it that this is a site where games are of 'pure strategy' and 'complete information'. I never played those games you mentioned, Oakmoss, so did not know about them. Dice, cards, spinners, involve the element of LUCK, and a game like Stratego, for example, (which I like, btw) does not provide complete information to both sides.

But perhaps I am wrong. meow!

littlegolem has some games with random factors, most obviously einstein, soccer and Ocean's Eleven. But also Numeric Wyps, all word games, (wyps, oski, golem word game?
). Also the Gipf project games (Dvonn, Lyngk, Tzaar) have random starting positions which can introduce a small factor of "luck" for a better set up than the opponent.

I play backgammon and other good games at yourturnmyturn.com, but sadly, that site will be closing this summer. So I have switched over to the "sister site"

I'm glad to see that 4 other players, besides myself, are enjoying the Gorrion site. (maybe more that I missed) The operation is quite easy, and the site owner is very responsive. He plays a lot, too.
To be clear, I am not suggesting any sort of mass defection. Folks here like playing games, and here is another place. That's all there is to it.
But the site has links to his other (free) software. It's good, useful stuff, and I am going to mention in other forums.
