This is in other games too. If you go e.g. here "http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=twixt" you see that "Monthly Cup" was renamed to "Cup" so we have now de facto "yearly cup". In the past if any player make no moves then game was unrated for rating (but counted in Player's statistics page) and this is probably still unchanged. I guess this is done because some games had little players playing in Monthly Cup.

The same thing has happened in Hex. Three of us are still active. For those games where I am to make the first move against inactive players, I resign. I don't like it.

But how is it that these 2003 cups are just now starting? Amazons, too, which I'm in.

I just looked at tournament pages for chess and go, both original games at this site.  Then, I clicked on "cup" and scrolled down to the bottom, and see that there are "final" cups for each game for both 2002 and 2003 (all the winners of the monthly cup).  Richard M. already played a move and won a chess game in this "final".  I note that these finals all started in January, but on different days for each of the four events I checked.  Maybe 2004 finals will be starting soon?  then 2005?  Richard, can you please let us know what is going on?  And how can we drop out of these tournaments?

I think it is a great idea to have  yearly cup, but maybe starting with 2015 instead of 2002?

i think one year is too long. Imo it's unreasonable to force someone into playing because he won a tournament a year ago, because that someone may have lost interest in the game by then, also it will probably not be unusual for people to have left the site during that year.

Maybe we should play games that people don't lose interest in, then.

Both those people and those games I'd say, but they're obviously not always paired.
