I know this is a bit presumptuous of me as a relative newcomer, but in the interest of elegance...
I'd like to propose the rule that, after an initial AB and the following AC, the word substituted should always be the one which made its entrance two turns previously, so that in this case the third turn must leave us with DC (or CD, of course), the fourth with DE (or ED), etc.
As a further proposal, I'd like to try making the game more finite by giving it the aim of terminating with a tying up of the ends.In other words, in the example: dog collar, collar stud, stud poker, poker work.... you're looking for the opportunity of reintroducing dog.
Final thing, my vision of the game is that it's played very much collaboratively, both in refraining from introducing a word which makes natural switches of direction difficult or impossible, but also in working to set up a finish for other players even if unable to finish on one's own turn. But unstrained phrasing should nevertheless take precedence over achieving a finish.
It may not work out at all, but let's give it a try.
