how to get desktop notifications about moves

Bigger Golem does not fork anymore, but there is something even better.

I use very nice Chrome extension _Page Monitor_:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/page-monitor/pemhgklkefakciniebenbfclihhmmfcd?hl=en

It makes it possible to monitor if there is a change in the state of the games pending the move.

_Setup_:

\* open and keep in your Chrome browser "My Games" page

\* go to Options, choose Custom mode: Regex and the pattern (without quotes): "On Move\s*-\s*\d+" (what means: On Move [empty space] - [empty space] [some digits])

After the status of pending games changes you can get the desktop notification and even a sound – very nice feature which enables to move immediately after your opponent moves!

Enjoy!

Not sure I like the idea of polling for changes. Yes, the API does not have a notification mechanism but

- Do you really need it? Are your really ready to play, whenever one of your opponent does?

- How about the additional traffic and database queries? Simple math will bring you to the insight that this approach can not scale! The right solution would be a notification mechanism supported by the site, e.g. in most database systems there are triggers or hooks or whatever they call it.

After all, I hate any kind of notifications that turn asynchronous into synchronous systems and move control from the human to the machine. (Also notifications are unhealthy as they produce adrenalin and bring you to some kind of permanent alarm situation. Also notifications typically disturb you in another task, or else you are ready to play an can hit the reload button by yourself.)

If you mouseover your icon in the top right, then click on My Profile, there is a check box for email notification. I never use it, but I believe it is for moves.

You could probably get your email client to alert you when you receive email.

To David:

Email notification never worked for moves. Actually I don't know what it is supposed to do.

To Mirko:

Site based notifications are the best solution and for me and it's a must have feature, but it's not here yet.

If I do polling every 12s or 1m it's not a problem unless significant percentage of users does the same.

If you hate notifications, the best solution for you is just not to use any ;)

But for me notifications are very useful, especially when I play just a few slow games. I don't think I am in alarm situations, I'm getting 0-2 notifications per evening (I don't use it at work during the day), most of the time I'm totally forgetting about games. Contrary, when I don't use notifications I feel uncomfortable with my curiosity about possible moves awaiting, and I check it manually too often and let myself produce adrenalin. Actually notifications help me to relieve from thinking about LittleGolem, relieve from adrenalin, relieve from compulsive checking. To sum up: you brought very important arguments, but they work quite an opposite for me.

To everybody else:

Those who decide to try the plugin please set Check Interval to reasonably high value (1 minute or more?) in order to minimize server load.

A refresh every 60 second per player sums up to one refresh every second for 60 players or one refresh every 10 milliseconds for 6000 players which is faster than the server response times given on the last line.

To those who aim for LG's world domination: Do not poll!
