If you are a fan of any civilization games I'd like to bring your attention to something that might be of interest to you. A possibilty to play civilization game multiplayer and turn based - almost littlegolem style (one of the reasons why I'm bringing it up here :), other being that comunity there is quite small): every turn lasts for one day (well 23 hrs really), and you are free to connect and give your orders at any time during this period, then as the time passes next turn starts and all of this repeats, till game ends and someone (or some alliance) wins.

For this you'll need:
*Freeciv* (freeciv.wikia.com) - free/open source/multiplatform civilization game engine (just a note: rules are closest to those of civilization 2)
account on the site where all of this is organized - *GreatTurn* (forums at http://civland.org
then wait till next game starts :) as comunity there is quite small, games do not start very often (probably once a couple of months, though if comunity grows...), next one is sheduled to start in middle of february, so you'd have plenty of time to get aquanted with interface and rules, smack some bots.

From what I have seen (and I'm qutie new member there too) games can last from 1 month (WWI scenario game) to more than half a year :), loads of fun though! Has everything self respecting civ games should have: reaserch, city bulding/expansion, conquest, diplomacy. Each game setup is voted on and various settings tweaked so when starting a game one should be aware of all the settings and their implications (freeciv is very customizable you see). And you can vote/propose settup too!

I hope there will be interested people here, seing as games here and civilization are kinda strategic, and turn based in similar sense, there should be some overlap in interested players, I can't be the only one.

I hope such post isn't too much against LG rules, though I have seen people posting their own games on frum so I hope its allright :), and GT (GreatTurn that is) really needs more people, especially intelligent and strategiclly minded!, which LG should have aplenty.

Apparently game was sheduled for mid March, and was resheduled to start on last day of February so you could still join. But it seems there is not much interest in that here :( Which is quite surprising as I though LG should have attracted some Civ fans.

I absolutely love Civ, been playing it since the first version. I've never played freeciv or a multi-player game, and I can't really commit to being able to play it every day right now.

I'm interested, tho. Please keep pushing it here.

Well hopefully there will be something to push, as comunty size is kinda stagnated and main person behind all the infrastructure is getting disinterested. But somehow it should survive, hopefully :) Also if you know any Civ fans it could be good idea to share information about existence of such thing on social network or such, cause people might not even imagine that such thing exists, while otherwise it would be very interesting to them.

I don't have the brain cycles to start something new. If it's still around late in the year, I hope I remember it.

I'm in the same position as pfafulous, I like Civ and spent many an hour during my student days playing it. I just don't have the time to commit though, but hopefully a few others will.

Whenever I see a thread like this, I keep hoping that it is the board game Civilizations, which I loved as a kid.

I enjoyed the computer game, but I doubt I'll make time for the learning curve right now.

Maybe this summer, when tax preparation season is over, and I've (hopefully) written my paper about 5x5 dots and boxes.

Best computer game ever! But I could never sign up to a turn based game with 23 hours per move. If it's a fixed time per move I'd need at least 3 days. And that would make the game too slow. :-(

(The board game is nice too, although I only play it once every decade, it just takes too long, 6-10 hours.)

Europa Universalis all the way!

UU is real-time and slow, so it requires continuous attention. You can pause it, but I you can't have it run quickly until the next event and then let you ponder.

I prefer the early Civ games and Alpha Centauri.

in EU4 you can set "pause on notification" for most of the events, and for each type separately. i know of some players who play a lot on speed 5 (max) with tons of automatic pauses. of course i understand that you may not like the gameplay anyway but just saying.
