How does the ranking position work?

I recently started paying attention to my "ranking position" I receive in messages at the end of a game. I noticed some inconsistencies.

My most recent message says my ranking position in Hex 13x13 is 15. However, the leaderboard on the Hex page (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex) currently has me at 6th place. The expanded leader board (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/info/player_list.jsp?gtvar=hex_DEFAULT) shows me at 10th place. In addition, some players rated higher than me are not in either of those leader boards - for example, cr0ssfir3 (player 16475).

How does all of this work?

maybe u are confusing the overall ranking (Based in the ELo rating)
with the Infinity tournaments ranking.

no, that's not it. I do play in the infinity tournament, but my rank there is unrelated.

I just realized that what I called "ranking position" is actually called "rating position"... sorry if that caused confusion. What I'm talking about is the messages you receive when the game ends. It says stuff like

old rating: 2145
newrating: 2172
rating position: 15th

If I recall correctly, there's one ranking in which inactive players don't appear.

Okay, but which one is it? I named 3 different rankings, each of which gives me a different number...

Check tasuki's page (and then click on the hex header.

It's unofficial but has all the players - active or not. If you click on the date column on the left, the player's ratings are updated.

I'm still puzzled by the leaderboards on littlegolem, but that link is very useful.

My guess is that either two or three of your three rating position lists are omitting inactive players, but that either (1) they use different standards for what counts as an inactive player, or (2) they update their inactive player lists on different schedules.
