tatami maker; noku

I saw this article posted on the math arxiv today:

It's about an idea of making tatmi mat designs. At the end is the description of a 2-player game, Noku.

I was recently imagining ceiling tile designs with the same restriction, + a qualification that any 1x1 section is where lighting panels should go.

'Twould seem that if a game of Noku ended with a completely filled board, the players could then get out their magic markers and play a no-draw connection game on it. :)
