#2 · bennok

No, in my place as in Thebes Lg was down. I had 7 timeouts, mos of hem to my disadvantage :(

#3 · sorim

The site was down for at least 12 hours - lost many games by timeout, too :-(

Well I have been away at a competition and used my vacation during that, not much could do I've been exhausted had about 15 hours left when I came to make a move.
Sometime life get in the way of playing board games.

Why couldn't the timer daemon have failed like it usually does? :(
Hope this gets undone it totally distort many championships and ratings!

true, this especially messed up the championship game for me, lost a clear winning game cause of LG being down.

I had maybe couple hours to make the move for a specific game, but it was during the time i come online (day time), so i could have easily made the move (which is what i came to do yesterday when i found LG being down).

When LG got fixed, it was during my night time which is when i sleep. i had no chance of just staying up all night for lg to fix up so i could make move immediately after within couple hours (assuming it froze the time before it went down).

I am very confused looking at this reactions...

yes, the server was down,
yes, the timer deamon didn't stop
but no, Richard or the down time is not to blame

It has been suggested before to not let the time pressure build so high.

well hjallti, there are new users like myself who dont know of this fact (we have not been on this site over a decade like u).
Its not like when i signed up it stated that LG may from time to time stop working for long periods of time and during this period i will lose games, hence i should save holidays or have atleast 24 hr at minimum for each game just in case such instances occur randomly.

We should put that warning about downtime in the FAQ, regardless of how frequently it's asked, along with something about "Here be daemons".

As I write (2012-09-02 21:17 GMT), the games and forum are working, but the link to "Main" (http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/index.jsp) in the "Main Menu" section on the left is returning an HTTP 500 error page that contains, among other things:

org.apache.jasper.JasperException: java.sql.SQLException: General error message from server: "Error writing file '/tmp/MYCxQfqv' (Errcode: 28)"

/tmp is either actually full, or not big enough to contain some temporary structures that MySQL needs to create. If the latter, then there's probably a large table without an appropriate index.

MarleysGhost - don't let me forget about the FAQ. Just tonight I've removed 5 more kilobytes of tag soup, and the file's almost human readable, and thus editable, now. When it's stable and mostly indistinguishable from Ed's then I can start making substantive changes to the content.

It is frustrating when the system is down.....I do not know the causes of these games sometimes being unavailable.......However we have been given a generous amount of time to play and much vacation time....I think that we should be very grateful to Richard for the opportunity to play these games...
In most parts of the world you can no longer go down to the local feed store and get anyone to play any kind of game.....

It appears that most(not all players) are not Members....This means that Richard has to provide most of the money and resources so that we can play and learn.....

If each player would send the cost of the causal cup of coffee(or glass of wine) to Richard, it would certainly make his life easier and possibly provide
some resources for any updates or enhancements to the system that may be desired.....

I am not Richard and I do not know Richard....however I am selfish and wish the
website to survive.....

+1 for Ishmael. The more people become members, the better for the site.

there isn't only one solution to problem, besides donating, that is. Richard can just find a volunteer who excels in programming and who wishes to help make this site less prone to going down randomly (and maybe even find the root cause).

Even if they cant fix it up, they should at least put a time freezer (it freezes at the time when the site goes down, and starts exactly the next same time...if it stops, lets say, at 4 pm, and starts at 2 am, that would still cause a problem, it should start at 4 pm the next day)

#20 · Ishmael

4 Sep 2012

In the past when the system has gone down....Richard has added time for players
and been critcized for that.......

Yes it would be be good for people to donate time to program the system....however no one knows the system as well as Richard.....

Why not donate the price of a cup of coffee each day or each game????

All systems can be improved......but if Little Golem is never improved it has been and is a positive contribution to the world!!!!!

having extra few hours because of system going down comparing to having no time and losing many games in process is a better option, and less people would be frustrated.

The people who have been criticizing that Richard is giving those players few extra hours, what have they got to complain???

Its not like the players would suddenly miraculously think of a winning move in those few hours that they couldnt have thought of before that. and if they do, then sometimes even very good people need those extra few mins.

But losing a game that u had already won only due to system going down, how is that fair over having few extra hours to think (not that like it would help).

The freeze time option's pros greatly outweighs the cons.

#22 · ypercube

4 Sep 2012

Freezing time technology is not avaialable yet. Littlegolem has only managed to go back to the future. Yet.

#23 · kingofthebesI

4 Sep 2012

Freezing time I presume would mean that the server detects it went down and disables the functionality that says the game will timeout for 24 hour (like how the -2hour thing works only justifiably fair)!
Surely there is a distinction between helping out someone who genuinely plays and times out due to server trouble and a zombie who signs up for everything and never plays and still get extra time! The complaint I read were, I thought about having to wait 30 days for a player to timeout who never plays!

#24 · FairyTail

5 Sep 2012

well, the site should have a self made time mechanism
like in games, if u shut it off in middle part at specific time, the next day it continuous at that same time (built in time)
So, this site should have one too, when the system goes down, it should consider itself being shut down and continue whenever its on (that doesnt agree with my previous comment on how it should start at the same time when it went down, but thats better than nothing)
am not a programmer myself, so i dont know if this mite be too complicated to plant (if it is, then nevermind... >__<)

#25 · ypercube

5 Sep 2012

@FairyTail: The problem is when the database is not down but only site is down or only access from the rest of the world is down.

#26 · Dvd Avins

Given that problems recur and will probably keep recurring, it would be most helpful if one could force vacation days before one's game timer reached zero.

Stop applying rational thought, yper!

You bloody Greeks, just because several millennia ago you invented almost everything that scientists nowadays hold most dear, you think that you can win arguments simply by being rational, sheeeesh...

Dang, how did you do the Greek? That was supposed to be Sigma-omicron-rho-iota.

#33 · Dvd Avins

17 Sep 2012

It wouldn't, as far as I can see now. I must have been confusing LG's timekeeping regime with another site's, where vacation will not be automatically applied. But I don't remember what I was thinking, so I'm not sure.
