What is the best way to tell whether an old game was rated or unrated? I know a game was rated if it appears in one of the following five lists:

Championship tournaments - http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex&page=ch

Monthly cup tournaments - http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex&page=mc

(Rated) User tournaments - http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex&page=ut

Rated games without tournament - http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex&page=rg

Old rating tournaments - http://www.littlegolem.net/jsp/games/gamedetail.jsp?gtid=hex&page=rt

If a game is not in one of the above five categories, is it therefore unrated? Here are a couple of randomly selected old games not in the above lists. Are they rated or not?

So far as I can tell, there is nothing in web page for a game or its SGF record which says directly that the game was (un)rated.

[Let's try that again with better formatting.]

What is the best way to tell whether an old game was rated or unrated? I know a game was rated if it appears in one of the following five lists:

\* Championship tournaments

\* Monthly cup tournaments

\* (Rated) User tournaments

\* Rated games without tournament

If a game is not in one of the above five categories, is it therefore unrated? Here are a couple of randomly selected old games not in the above lists. Are they rated or not?

My theory: if it says "Tournament:" it means the game was rated, and if it doesn't say it, it means the game was unrated. If you start a rated game in the rating room, it says "Tournament: null"

Interesting idea. All games that I have checked say "Tournament:". Do you know of games that don't have a "Tournament:" line? (As opposed to just "Tournament: null".)

Look at my ongoing Havannah games. Most of them are unrated and have no tournament line.

That seems promising -- thanks! I'll run some tests to see if the theory holds up.

I checked around 1000 old hex games of unknown status (not part of a tournament, not on the "rating games" list), and in every case they had "Tournament: null" rather than no tournament line at all. Perhaps the criterion suggested by Tommah only works for newer games? Or perhaps unrated hex games are extremely rare?

Well, there goes my theory. One of my unrated games ended, and now it says "Tournament: null." Maybe Richard could just add an indication to each game saying rated or unrated.

the first game was unrated for sure: the player on 1500 had never a change in rating and the game was drawless, from it follows that game was unrated
