Calvinball 1

Public forum discussion.

Okay than let's play it on an originally empty 19x19 go ban

I am the referee (and possibly also a player)

The winner is the first to move the ball to the centre square j10 with 3 distinct methods

The four objects of different sports initially are the ball: a rugby ball, which is not safe to move more than 3 places straight (grubber kick rule), the referee decides on strange moves of the ball when you move it more than 3 places.

A tennis racket (called Aussie-Kim)

A "klapschaats" (honouring the dutch legion of players around)

A bowling ball

First rule: You can't play twice in a row.

Ball is Grubber in to d4 but already turned and is now at d3.

Good luck

I'm not sure what's going on, but I guess that's par for the course.

Is "klapschaats" a disease or its treatment?

Lob to f3.

We (in Belgium) didn't know either when it first occured in the 90's,

it may help if you know that in dutch combined words are written without spaces...

in English it would make "klap schaats".

I roll the bowling ball to i9.

Second rule: When using the tennis racket, your post can be maximum 10 words long.

Two random comments from a non-playing referee: (1) You're off to a great start in this game; (2) Geeze, I miss Calvin and Hobbs.

Where can I find the rules?

racket -> centre.

#4: j10 must be otherwise empty to win

My interpretation of the current situation (I will call that "inside referee's snapshot":

The ball is at f3

MarleysGhost is at d3 inspecting a klapschaats

klapschaats is at d3

The bowling ball is at i9

racket is at j10

FatPhil is at j10

Hjallti is at m17 also wearing a white-black vertically striped shirt)

rules sheet is at m17 (you don't need it to post new rules :-), but it is interesting for na_wspak to know where to search...

Watching from the outside:

Marius Halsor (somewhere around i0)

Richard Lorentz (wearing a white-black vertically striped shirt)

Doctor_Strange

na_wspak is searching the rules

rules sheet (dropped at m17):

#1: You can't play twice in a row.

#2: When using the tennis racket, your post can be maximum 10 words long.

#3: out bounds= fair play

#4: j10 must be otherwise empty to win

#5: which is not safe to move more than 3 places straight (grubber kick rule), the referee decides on strange moves of the ball when you move it more than 3 places. (For diagonal play it is up to (2,2) safe (that distance is 2 root(2))

win condition (precising):

The winner is the first to move the (rugby)ball to the centre square j10 with 3 distinct methods.

score:

MarleysGhost: 3 blob

Marius Halsor: blow 9 y

Richard Lorentz: 0 nill out

Doctor_Strange: fair 34 away

na_wspak: adr 1 ft

FatPhil: rocket 42

Hjallti: minus 273

(Feel free to add your score to your post one of the referees will check it out)

Does anyone know how to include a picture? I have a .png of the current situation.

#17 · Hjallti

14 Jan 2012

'adding your score to your post" is something else than "post a score"

but anyways... I am fine with

Mirko Rahn: "h1gh er 0 r" (I added numbers to confine with Calvinball tradition)

#18 · Doctor_Strange

14 Jan 2012

I jump up and down and the earth shakes, moving the ball like a knight to e5. I also make a new rule: #6. Whenever you move the ball like a knight, you have to drink a shot of whiskey (or whisky, if you prefer)

#19 · FatPhil

15 Jan 2012

Well, I'll take a shot of Auchentoshan Three Wood, Spanish Sherry Cask, because I can, but that's nothing to do with my move.

For that, seeing the obvious tactical weakness in the current setup, I run to E3 and block Marley's Ghost from moving towards or otherwise playing the ball.

Rule #7: If approaching from behind you may put a brown paper bag over an opponent's head which may cause them to run the right distance, but in the wrong direction.

#20 · Paavo Pirinen

15 Jan 2012

I swivel furiously with no other apparent effect than that my position is now poorly determined (could be i5).

My score: just elevated to honorary position of The Grand Fire-Duke Of The Most Exuberant Para-Umbra And The Guardian Of The Seven Ligatures Of Connecticut

Rule #8: Rule #14 will not be understood.

I have a very nice system figured out to calculate the grubber: you might try it. Every move afterwards will be regarded as started from the position the previous ball ended.

((the system is briefly as follows: if a ball's direction is not certain (than a 6 sided die is thrown. For 1,2,3 the ball continues in that direction with that amount certain, further is re-thrown. For 4 it turns to the left and 5 to the right and is again in grubber, at 6 it stops at that point, total distance is at most intended distance))

I place a beer on Q 17 which urges FatPhil to move there.

Rule #9: It is allowed to break rules, if you manage to break an even number of rules simultaneosly.

#24 · Hjallti

18 Jan 2012

A bit confused by the silence in the game I walk to the ball (I had plenty of time and kick it towards the center)

The ball is assumed to go the distance of 5V2.

f6,g7 are reached safely.

die throw 1: h8 is reached straight

die throw 4: the ball bends to the left and goes to i8 rather than i9.

die throw 5: bends back diagonally to j10 where it stops

Well, i was only reading, but now since a Auchentoshan Three Wood, Spanish Sherry Cask is involved, I go drink it at a2. And I bring a bottle of Highland park 18 y myself.

#28 · na_wspak

19 Jan 2012

I found the rules. I play tennis rocket to q17. The beer is hit and spilled. I understand rule #14.

Rule #10 The spilled beer makes a black hole on every neighboring field - nobody/nothing can get out of black hole unless (s)he/it have had a beer with tachyons.

#29 · Hjallti

23 Jan 2012

I do like the nomica (frc) feel the game is getting, but I don't want to end up getting to make frc judgements, therefor I decided to renumber

rule 9 as rule #14

na_wspak found the rules and directly offended 1...

(((frc was a comittee born from a online nomica website featuring a real great logical game, I liked very much. combinations of rules like 8 and 9 were common and judged)))

#30 · FatPhil

24 Jan 2012

I'll head to Q17 and start brewing a tachyon beer. I succeed a long time ago.

Unfortunately I drink it all, and now start staggering in random directions.

Rule #15 Anyone who is hereafter adjacent to me is prevented from moving in the next turn as I delay them with my drunken ramblings, and endless repetition of "you're my best mate".

This fortunately increases my score to Rocketfuel 42!

#33 · MarleysGhost

24 Jan 2012

I run to z34 and try to kick the ball back onto the playing field.

Oh, no, I've kicked so hard that the ball reaches 94.3% of the speed of light (gamma=3) and splits into three parts that land on Q14, P16 and N17. In a weird variation of anti-matter, if any two of the parts collide, they will annihilate each other.

#34 · Doctor_Strange

26 Jan 2012

I run very fast around the perimeter several times creating a black hole at j10, two of the three parts get sucked into the black hole, and just when I think I am about to win, fat phil gets sucked in the hole and clogs it up, fat phil is still alive, but is stuck in the hole with the top half of his body sticking out, and the third ball (and now the only ball) bounces off his head and lands on c6. Luckily for FatPhil, he has managed to keep his tachyon beer from spilling, and still in his hand.

Rule #pi: Whenever you can line up five balls or objects or people in a row, you can eliminate any rule you want.

#35 · Marius Halsor

26 Jan 2012

Sticking out from the black hole, FatPhil and his tachyon beer now makes a perfect target for the bowling ball. I pick it up, aim, and throw...

#36 · Doctor_Strange

18 Feb 2012

It has been several weeks since the bowling ball spilled Fat Phil's tachyon beer, meanwhile, since Fat Phil has been passive, the spilled beer lubricated the black hole just enough for Fat Phil to slip through into oblivion, and the third ball quickly followed him into the hole, therefore, I claim a win unless someone else can somehow interfere with my winning strategy. Rule #i, if one month goes by without any post to this forum, the entire Calvin ball playing field will get sucked into the black hole and it will implode into a pulsar...
