I don't want to hijack ypercube's farewell thread, so here's a new one.

Any bridge players around? We could do a BBO game every so often...

Now that I have a place to rant...

28 board KO yesterday. First half: lead 69-15, only loss comes from teammates -1400 after a weak NT opening (these happen sometimes -- still I have nothing against WNT). Still, pretty happy about our match.

Second half: 63-6 loss (including a misunderstanding to reach 3NT-1 instead of 6H/6D making, a misdefense by partner allowing 6NT to make, and a completely random "out of spite" balance by me following these two boards, for a negative partscore swing.).

Lose by 3, with more than 150 imps exchanged in 28 boards(!!). Aaaaaaaaaargh.

Me too. I just started playing in July... only on BBO so far, and I've yet to venture out of the relaxed room. But I'm up for a challenge.

My problem is that I rarely can plan ahead to play on BBO at a fixed time, so I've never found (or even looked for) a regular partner there. Which means just playing with random partners, which means less fun. So in the end I don't play there that much. It's the reason why I'm one of the few perverts who would love to play bridge on littlegolem or a similar turn based non-real time site. (Yeah, I know cheating would be extremely easy!)

I was thinking about turn-based bridge play the other day, but I quickly realized that no one except me would ever try something like that. Apparently I was mistaken. :) How would it work -- have two teams of four? Each table plays the same hand, then when both tables are finished start the next one?

I'd rather have many hands played in parallel. How exactly would of course depend on the tournament type.

For filling 2 tables we'd just need 6 more players, Tommah! (And a bit of software unfortunately!)

So do you mean rubber games?

It would take some new software, but if there were enough interest, I could try to write something in my spare time. I always like to have a side project.

Is anybody interested in entering a pairs tournament on BBO sometime? They seem to have a lot of free pairs tournaments running most of the time.

On a related note, I started playing in the free individual tournaments, and tonight I won! http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=5407-1337660881&u=Tommah This was only my third try, too; I thought it would take dozens.

I decided to take the plunge into the pay tournaments, to see how much tougher they are. Quite a bit... but now, six dollars later, I have a little (2) next to my name.

Is anybody from Little Golem attending the NABC in Philadelphia? I may play in one of the beginner games next week.

Anyone for a friendly game at BBO online? (times: after UTC 00:00)

Oops, missed Tommah's message. Just came back from 12 days of bridge in Philly, that was... intense :-). Yper: sure but I'd rather play either late in the evening or early in the morning here in California.

antony, how did you do in Philly? I played in two newcomer games there. I finished just below 50% in each game... I made too many silly mistakes. I did manage to get some masterpoints, though.

I just had to show this off, from earlier tonight: http://webutil.bridgebase.com/v2/tview.php?t=2662-1343343121&u=Tommah I scored 100% on four out of six boards. I probably won't be topping that score for a while! --- It makes up for a heartbreaker I had last night: after the first four hands (two of which I declared brilliantly) I had a score of about 67%. Then on the last two hands I got 0% (doubled the opponents' 2NT, too aggressive) and 12% (stayed in 4C instead of 5C, too timid). I ended at 50% exactly. That hurts.

Random advertisement: The World Mind Sport Games are taking place now in Lille, France. Chess, Draughts, Go, Xiangqi and of course (:-)) Bridge: http://worldbridge.org/tourn/Lille.12/microSite/Results.htm
You can watch live (commented!) play on www.bridgebase.com; yesterday Monaco was knocked out in the semis by Sweden and for those of you who don't know anything about bridge that was a HUGE upset.
