World Cup Prediction Game

Public forum discussion.

#1 · quartastella

17 May 2010

The madness is about to start (less than four weeks). Let's have a prediction game to see who understands the beautiful game better than anyone else here.

How to play:

Copy and paste the list of the 32 teams below (and the tiebreaker).

Next to each team write "1R" if you think the team will be eliminated in the first round, "2R" if you think the team will exit in the second round, "QF" if you think the team will be eliminated in the quarterfinals, "SF" if you think the team will go out in the semifinals, "F" if you think the team will lose the final, or "C" if you think the team will be the 2010 World Champion.

You should indicate one C, one F, two SF, four QF, eight 1R, and sixteen 2R, but if you want to do something different because you have a different strategy, do as you please.

The teams are listed in the order of the groups they appear in: the first four teams are included in group A, the next four in group B, and so on.

How are predictions scored? If you guess rightly where a team ended you get 5 points for that team. For example, if you wrote "QF" next to XYZ and XYZ is actually eliminated in the quarterfinals you get 5 points for that team. If XYZ is eliminated one round earlier (second round) or one round later (semifinals) you get 5-1=4 points. If XYZ is eliminated two rounds earlier or later you get 5-2=3. And so on, of course. The maximum you can get for one team is 5 points. The least is 0 points. The maxim total points in the game is 160.

Don't forget to add your prediction in the tiebreaker at the end of the list: how many goals will be scored in all in the 2010 World Cup? The tiebreaker will be used to rank players with the same number of points.

The last day to turn in your predictions is June 8th. Have fun and good luck!

Yes, I meant eight 2R and sixteen 1R. I checked the post three times before I posted it and still I missed it. Thanks for clarifying. And glad to see klaashaas posted everything correctly.

21 May 2010

ok, but I'm german. Just living in the US. So I grew up with soccer everywhere right and left. And still I don't like it. 20 people get paid millions to run back and forth, and lose the ball after every third contact. Just booooring. :-| Like watching paint dry...

#18 · Aganju

21 May 2010

As a consequence, I know next to nothing anymore about who is who in the soccer world.

Maybe that's a good starting point to win this though.

#19 · kingofthebesI

21 May 2010

The game is called football, even in Germany it is Fußball I believe. The creator has naming right unless trademark or patent would be infringed.

The money is ridiculously high even for the average players, should go to board gamers instead ;)

The right games aren't like watching paint dry?

to make an ß, use this sequence without the blanks: ' & sz lig;' - the ';' is part of it! (it comes from 'sz', which is what germans call that letter, speak 'ess-zet'; and 'ligature'.

So it's called Fußball in german.

Some interesting predictions so far. Argentina and Italy are given as low as first rounders and as high as finalists. England, Germany, and Brasil are picked as low as second rounders and as high as champions. But the greatest gap belongs to Chile: from first round to champion.

I wanted to warn Huw Rees that he has picked three SF's and three QF's. I'm not sure if this is strategy or an error, but he can change his pick if he wants.

Last day to turn in predictions is June 8th. Hope you're watching those warm-up games closely (yesterday England beat Mexico 3-1, Australia beat New Zealand 2-1, South Korea won away in Japan 2-0, and Portugal was stopped 0-0 by Cape Verde Islands).

Who knows? Your system could be the right one. After all this promises to be a very uncertain world cup due to so many factors:

\* first WC played in Africa

\* first WC in 32 years played in winter

\* some games played at sea level and some games played well above sea level

\* first WC ever without a debutant (Slovakia played before as Czechoslovakia)

\* a weird syntetic ball that reminds the plastic balls we used as kids

Anything can happen.

Micco, your predictions should have 16 1R, 8 2R, 4 QF, 2 SF, 1 F, and 1 C. Of course maybe you are using a different strategy.

Same thing with Huw Rees.

Last few hours to make your predictions. A bunch of crucial injuries (Drogba, Robben, Pirlo, etc.) in the last few days have added more uncertainty to an already very uncertain World Cup.
