As a result, the evildoers had to settle for competing for second place. But it seems that the second-place trophy itself came to life in anger at the thought of being given to one of the two cruel miscreants. UEP’s wording is a bit unclear, but presumably when they say, “In the 12th round the heated struggle for the second place became enraged,†this is what they mean. I wish I could have been there to see that trophy hopping off its shelf, hopping mad, and exclaiming in a small, indignant voice, “I will not be given to either of those two brutes unless they leave poor Vishy alone.†I don’t know what kind of voice a trophy has, but perhaps it resembles the voice of a trophy wife.
Treachery was involved as well: one of Anand’s own countrymen was in on the Kramnik-Gelfand plot. UEP magnanimously declines to identify him, but does clarify that Anand missed an opportunity to bring him to justice:
Anand reacted very quickly, but inaccurately. As a result, an Indian Grandmaster managed to escape…
Probably he ran to Kramnik’s bathroom and used some of the extensive equipment Kramnik is rumored to keep there to pry open the window.
Given all this, it’s odd that UEP even wants to organize this match. Well, let’s hope they keep it clean. The motto for the World Chess Championship should be:
KEEP THE SPANISH INQUISITION OUT OF CHESS
NO PERSECUTIONS IN 2008
And perhaps UEP’s motto should simply be:
FIND SOMEONE WHO KNOWS ENGLISH

Xylothism is a disease and psychological disorder derived from the Greek words “xylon†for wood and “othism†for pushing. A xylothist is a derogatory description of a chess player gone wrong.
Too much of anything is never good for anybody. Addiction to alcohol, drugs and gambling are serious social problems that destroyed the lives of a great number of people, as is the addiction to chess. Addiction varies in different stages with some, suffering more than others.
Bobby Fischer was so enamored by the game at the age of six that he never ‘grew up’. He never developed the social skills necessary to cope with society in general and lived in a world of his own.
SANITARIUM. Former World Champion Wilhem Steinitz ended up in a sanitarium, while Paul Morphy, who is considered as one of the greatest players of all time, stopped playing at an early age as the game was ‘eating’ his mental and emotional faculties. American Champion Harry Nelson Pillsbury was a broken man who tried to throw himself from the fourth story window of a Philadelphia hospital where he was being treated.
I have observed, at first hand, families destroyed by the game and great fortune lost because of it.
Here are some quotations from the book by Andy Soltis, “Chess to enjoy.â€
The American Chess Bulletin described the game’s vicious nature aptly: “Chess is erroneously described as a gentle pastime.
It combines the Spanish Inquisition with a puritan witch-baiting, preserving the most exquisite tortures of each. Pulling out an enemy’s toenail with red-hot pincers is childlike in comparison with winning a pawn from him on the 10th move and forcing him, for want of that pawn, to resign on the 87th.â€
This malady was accurately diagnosed by H.G. Wells and, though perhaps comical, it is true: “The passion for playing chess is one of the most unaccountable in the world. It slaps the theory of natural selection in the face. It is the most absorbing of occupations, the least satisfying of desires, an aimless excrescence on life. It annihilates a man. You have, let us say, a promising politician, a rising artist, that you wish to destroy. Daggers or bombs are archaic, clumsy and unreliable — but teach him, inoculate him with chess!â€
Listen to a 17th century minister recounts the evils of the game “,It is a great time waster. How many precious hours have I profusely spent in this game! O, chess, I will be avenged for the loss of my time! It hath not done with me when I have done with it. It has followed me into my study, into my pulpit. When I have been praying or preaching I have (in my thoughts) been playing chess!â€
With the advent of the Internet, chess addiction has increased by leaps and bounds. There are dozens of websites where you can play 24 hours a day against opponents all over the world.
I must confess that I am, to a certain degree, addicted to internet chess having played more than 15,000 games in about four years. Lately, though, my time has been devoted to online poker—Hold ‘em, Omaha and the Seven-Card Stud. By the way, Hold ‘em poker is a rage in the Philippines and is now played in several spots in Cebu.
TANJAY WINNERS. As part of the fiesta celebration of Tanjay, Negros Oriental, an open chess tournament was sponsored by US-based National Master Zaldy Ybañez, a nuclear engineer and former varsity player of Cebu Institute Technology and the only player who defeated GM Tigran Petrosian in a simultaneous exhibition in Cebu, back in the late 70s.
It was also organized by Engr. Bobby Tabaloc of the King and Pawns Chess Club of Tanjay City in coordination with Tanjay Mayor Balthazar Salma.
The winners are (champion) Eden Diano, (second) Pipo Moreno, (third) Hamed Nouri, (fourth) Richard Natividad, (fifth) Voltaire Sevillano and (sixth) Anthony Makiniano.
The Cebuanos, who went to Tanjay, were sponsored by former Cebu Executives and Proffessionals Association president Jun Olis, who is from Tanjay.

I've heard of people using a computer to cheat because "I KNOW my opponent is cheating." That is no excuse. Play your best, maybe you'll learn something from the computer. Your opponent has already lost.
In summary, this is only a perceived problem. A few dishonest people make very little difference one way or another. If a person has such a dismal life that they get a big ego boost by watching good chess players lose to their computer, then I say let them have their fun. They must really need it.
All true chess players are winners. Let's have Spanish openings, not a Spanish Inquisition.

Queen Isabel of Castilla was an important woman. She:
united Castile and Aragon to form modern Spain,
conquered the sole remaining Muslim state in the Peninsular,
introduced the Inquisition to her realm,
evicted the Jews from her domains,
sent successful armies into Italy, and
discovered the Americas.
So it should be no surprise that she also inspired the powerful Queen in the modern game of chess. Somebody has even written a book about it ...

One unmentioned peculiarity is, that, under the new rules, not only the power of the Queen was greatly increased, but also that of the Church. Formerely impotent Elephants gained, as Bishops, equal strength to the King’s Cavalry! This is an obvious change to consider, especially in that era, once the change of ‘Fer’ to Queen is considered: just as the Queen sits next in power to the King, the Church sits next in power to the Crown.
And this change is indeed made in several languages, but not in Spanish of course. To this day in Spanish the bishop is known by its original arabic name ‘Alfil’. It would therefore seem that the poets missed an excellent opportunity to even more please their Catholic Monarchs (who were perhaps very devout, but as monarchs must also have been naturally inclined to the opinion that the power of the Crown supersedes that of the Church). Perhaps fear of the mighty Inquisition made the poets still think the better of it? I wonder whether this point is adressed in any of the studies and I am looking forward to read (or hear) more about it.

"The Spanish Inquisition was particularly terrifying because of its inherent characteristics. The accused never knew who their accusers were. Once arrested, the accused heretic's properties were seized. These properties were then administered at first by the Crown, and later by the General Inquisitor. This fostered the means for anyone to accuse for personal reasons, or to get gain. In many areas, '. . . men began to wonder whether a man's worldly wealth, as well as his descent, was now become [sic] an incriminating circumstance' (Roth, 1964, The Spanish Inquisition. United States of America: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. p. 60). The Inquisition certainly did not limit itself to purifying only those of the Jewish faith. This was especially true if the accused was found to have any Jewish blood in his ancestry. Even if the accused was now a devout Christian, he was tried as severely as possible because of his roots. The accused was also not allowed to have a lawyer or counsel for his defense, and the names of all witnesses were kept secret from him."[2]
"More than 13,000 Conversos were put on trial during the first 12 years of the Spanish Inquisition. Hoping to eliminate ties between the Jewish community and Conversos, the Jews of Spain were expelled in 1492.

Why do you put "[sic]" in that quote? It is proper English.
9 Oct 2009
It is very odd English. I'm tempted to say archaic, but I doubt that it was normal usagem even at the time the King James Bible was promulgated.
