I would like to have a strong bot to train with. Doing so on LG is too slow. Is the above program the best choice? (If only it provided a board-evaluation function.) Does it have any weird/bad habits one should know about?
More generally, any strategy guides, puzzle collections, etc. are most welcome. Here is a short strat guide I found on BGG.
In my opinion, the best and most user-friendly computer player is on the Amazons Board Game app for android. While I don’t know it’s exact rating, it is likely 2000+. The reason for this is that it its professional / expert settings are more than enough to consistently beat me, and I suspect other players in the realm of 1800-1900 would struggle with it as well.
Unfortunately it does not have a board-evaluation function; I’m not sure if any Amazons computers do. However, its two player setting makes it relatively easy to analyze multiple variations on the same position, and I have found that quite useful. Additionally, it has no obvious flaws that I am aware of.
Finally, if you’re looking to improve more quickly, I’d recommend joining igGameCenter as well. It has a fantastic interface for playing live Amazons games, and you can discuss positions with your opponents very easily. Unfortunately Amazons is not a popular game there, so it’s difficult to find opponents, but it’s still worth checking out.
