I'm curious about the star-shaped pattern on the Twixt board. What is its purpose?

I see that the lines show how hypothetical connections can be made along them, but was wondering if there's anything beyond that.

The lines can help you see who will win a race (ladder) towards the edge. Personally I don't care for those lines, and you can select a blank board under edit user properties.
