Pass as the first move?
  • hershoff at 2013-04-26

What happens, if the first player passes?

  • hershoff at 2013-04-26

What happens, if the first player passes?

    “Correct link"

  • MarleysGhost at 2013-04-26

Good trick. I'll have to remember that when I'm the first player and the second player is much stronger.

  • KPT at 2013-04-26

But definitely a bug i think. haha

  • z at 2013-04-26

Why did the second player also pass?

  • MarleysGhost at 2013-04-26

The board now shown after the first move is blank. That isn't proof of what was shown to the second player during the game, but if the second player was indeed confronted with a blank board after the first Pass, the only legal moves were to Pass or Resign.

Note: During the first move, the first tile that the first player places puts the coordinates of three cells into the URL, but Pass shows no cells' coordinates, so I expect the second player faced a blank board.

I have the same situation in a championship game:

    What should I do?
My only options are “resign” or “swap”…

  • Marius Halsor at 2013-05-03

“Pass” should only be a legal move if it's impossible to play a tile. Similar to reversi, where you can only pass if you're unable to place stone. I hope this is fixed, and that no-one esploits this bug while we wait for it to be fixed.

  • z at 2013-05-03

I had reported the bug to Richard last week in case he didn't check this sub-forum.

I think it's okay to allow players to pass any time during the game, but if the first player passes, the second player must be able to place a piece onto the board.

  • MarleysGhost at 2013-05-03

@Marius: “'Pass' should only be a legal move if it's impossible to play a tile.”

It also makes sense to pass if you're sufficiently ahead. Especially if your opponent just passed. But I agree that Pass should not be a legal initial move of the game.

  • Tellmarch at 2013-05-06

Still no news about what I should do in my championship game?

  • z at 2013-05-06

    What if you swap?

  • Tellmarch at 2013-05-07

I expect he will then have to pass, then I will have to pass, and the game will be a draw?
    I want to win :-)

  • FatPhil at 2013-05-07

Pass on a first move could be treated as just changing the sides. Player 2 becomes the new player 1, and has to place 2 pieces.

However, forbidding pass on the first move would be the easiest solution.

  • Tellmarch at 2013-05-10

I'm still wondering what I should do in my championship game.

  • Tellmarch at 2013-05-14

    I'll have to pass soon I guess…

  • Richard Malaschitz ★ at 2013-05-14

I repair it (I hope ?!). No pass is possible in first move.

  • Tellmarch at 2013-05-14

First, thanks for fixing it, and more generally for all your work on this website, it's great.

My only question now is what to do about my ongoing game?
It's a championship game, else I would have simply resigned long ago…

    this is the game:

  • LEESD at 2013-05-16

it's hard for me to set opening, that i was trying to let you(Tellmarch) set opening for the game. ;p

and I never thought that there is a bug,

now the question is… what I can only do is RESIGN, could you fix this also? thanks. :))

i have to set the opening after all… lol

  • Richard Malaschitz ★ at 2013-05-19
