SGF to Printable format converter
  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-07-08

Hi all, I've written a little page that allows you to upload SGF files and converts them to a nice, printable diagram.

    Have a look: http://os16.cjb.net/sgf2print/

If you find any bugs, please let me know. But as far as I have tested it, it works fine with games from Littlegolem, IGS and KGS.

If you want to upload your Littlegolem games, right click on the link TXT, just above the list of all moves in the game, choose “SAVE TARGET AS” and save the file as “yournamehere.sgf”. So dont save it as “png.jsp” as internet explorer might suggest. Then go to the page and upload the file you just created. It should work.

    Ciao,

    Adam Buczynski

Looks good. It would be nice to enter the SGF-text via the clipboard (copy/paste) in stead of files.

I've also noticed that in some notations the i row is skipped (I asume because it looks too much like the l). This is causing problems when I look at littlegolem games in Jago. Anybody happen to know a workaround/solution for that?

  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-07-08

Good idea about the clip board. What do you mean exactly by the i-row problem? (ICQ het me eens)

  • klaashaas at 2003-07-08

My JAGO board has no i-row (no i-coordinates). Therefor it can't correctly read the littlegolem's SGF (littlegolem has an i-row). It's probably a little setting, or something like that in Jago (anyone can tell me where to find it?).

Related to your topic: I assume there are sgf-files where the i-coordinates are used, and some where they don't use the i-coordinates (they skip the i row and continue with j).

Is there anyone who knows more about this?

I think the standard is no 'i'-row.

LittleGolem is the only place I have ever seen the 'i'-row.

  • fhayashi at 2003-07-08

to clarify, it seems that the letter 'i' is used within the .sgf file itself, but the display of the board position shouldn't have an 'i' row.

    Thanks, it's clear.

I remember I had some games not showing correctly in Jago, but I just tried a few games, and all were displayed fine. So it must be me who saw things wrong:)

  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-07-08

Yes, I think the i-rows are used in SGF files but not displayed on the board.

  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-07-08

The vertical axis is now displayed properly, running 1-19 from bottom to top.

  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-07-08

The i column is now removed, and the captured stones are displayed otherwise (first move at particular position is displayed in the diagram, folluw up moves on same position are displayed below the board.)

Just in case you weren't aware, the SGF file format standard ismaintained at: www.red-bean.com/sgf

Actually, I hope this bit of information is still true. This morning I can't get a response from the site. This standard uses coordinates in which horizontal and vertical axes are both marked with lower-case English letters starting at “a”. This system is fine for an internal file format, but doesn't match the way printed and computer-generated go boards are labeled.

I'm not aware of a written standard on how to display the board. Little Golem's column “I” is pretty unusual. Most things I've seen (including JAGO and Many Faces of Go) go from H to J, without stopping at I.

Also, I believe the usual way that multiple moves at the same spot is handled is by showing the board as it would look if played with stones. Captured prisoners don't appear and if multiple move have been made at the same spot the move number shown is the latest move with earlier moves marked below the board.

wow i just tried the page, that is really excellent! thanks Adam, very cool. what a great tool.

  • Ken at 2003-07-30

small tweaking suggestion: could you change the font for the numbers to be a slightly heavier font? when using an ink jet printer, the black from the stones makes the white numbers a bit hard to read. is this a style sheet issue or a browser setting issue?

also, a note on your page telling people to be sure that the “print backgrounds” setting is selected in their printing preferences would be useful. when i actually tried to print one out, it took a few tries to get the grid and stones to show.

  • Adam Buczynski at 2003-08-01

Ken, that are two good comments yes. I've received many questions about the background not showing. I'll either change those pictures from background to foreground or add a small note on the site.

As for the font, Ill see what I can do.
