Go 37x37

Great! Shall we have Hex with size 37?

  • Nathan F Miller ★ at 2013-05-15

    I would support such a grand-scale Hex.

How does one arrive at the figure of 37? My guess – take 19 x 2 = 38. Then we want an odd number so that there is a center point. Of the two closest, 37 is prime.

A serious game in 19x19 can be (say) 280 moves long. In the same proportion (77% of the board area) a 37x37 game can have 1062 moves. Silly games can have a lot more. A serious game in LG can take 9 months (especially in a tournament where players have too many games to analyze, people who procrastinate make the games over one year long). In the same proportion a serious game played well can take 34 months to finish. Silly games over four years.

How suitable for an “infinity tournament” then :-S

  • Thomas at 2013-06-01

When does it start? It is open for more than 2 weeks now…

  • Dvd Avins at 2013-06-03

I'd like to see a big Twixt board.

  • maraca at 2013-06-03

I second that, TwixT 32x32 or 36x36 it wouldn't even be that crazy, considering the average length of a TwixT game.

  • pfafulous at 2013-06-11

And it's on! Holy cow, this is a big board.

  • Ray Garrison at 2013-06-14

the analysis link does not work for go 37x37.

  • ypercube at 2013-06-14

@Ray I don't think EidoGo supports this size.

Creating a Dan strength go bot suddenly has become a no-brainer!

Just let it play randomly as slow as possible (also using all vacation days) and let it play 37x37 exclusively. Such a game would probably have roughly 1000 moves and take about 5 years. So the bot would win (by timeout) against anyone staying on little golem for less than 5 years, which I assume is the vast majority.

Do I win any AI award for such an incredibly clever algorithm? ;-)

I am suddenly having issues with Java exceptions on the go-37x37 games and only on those games. I keep getting the following exception when I try to submit my move. The first thing it does is return to the last move by my opponent and then if I try again it will give me this exception code: Exception:java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: -34
This is happening with games #1555360 and #1553234
    Can anybody help?

  • Dvd Avins at 2014-01-02

Are you playing on a phone? When my 37x37 games first started, I got that and just figured the size wasn't compatible with something in the IOS. I skip all those games until I get home.
