Reply to this topic Return to forumYou let my white 14 and 16 take away your base, so the three stone wall you had was put in danger.
The Joseki Tutor at the TurboGo site says of your move 8 “This move is rather submissive, so White should only play here if territory is very important to him: he well [sic] give Black a wall of steel on the outside.” Of course in the lines given by that site, it's true. But you varied from those lines, breaking up my wall, by your move 12.
I figured there must be some good way (or at least a not bad way) to exploit your position in a way that would give me an advantage comparable to the position Black achieves in the lines given. Obviously, if there is such a way I didn't find it.
black 8 at q3 was the simple 3-3 invasion response to your pincer. The usual reply is q4, but you defended the invasion the wrong way.
Your pincer at p8 usually means you want to stress the right side, and I obliged by taking the corner territory and you were supposed to make a wall going from right to left, giving you the right side. Your p8 pincer stone would then be ideally placed to insure a base for your wall.
Instead, you made the wall in the wrong direction, and didn't back up your wall, so I swept away your wall's base.
Then it was a matter of chasing that group around, forming strong walls on both sides.
The Joseki Tutor seems to think that 8 at o4 may be preferable to q3. And it does show Black building the wall against White's stones when q3 is played. As I said before, we were following the lines given there until 12 at p6 rather than q5 or q2.
Is the database really that wrong?
the database is probably not wrong.
I think the problem was your response at s7, and not responding correctly to my L3.
(using the conventional annotation which has no “I” column).
They say you should not get too dependent on Joseki.
Thank you. You're probably right about S7. And you're certainly right that I didn't see the strength of L3.
If you had played black 39 at o9 would have given me a big problem. My cutting stones would have been caught in a loose ladder.
