I discovered this interesting site recently www.pychess.org  You can play and analyze many many variants of chess, shogi, xianqi, etc.  (For example, you can play Christian Freeling's Grand Chess on a 10x10 board)  You can challenge others to real time games, or play the computer.  The layout is very similar to lichess.  Never seems to be too many humans on line at any given time (usually under 20),  it appears they are slowly developing the site (it is a couple of years old).  You log in using your lichess.org credentials.  I could not log in via google for some reason, but other browsers work fine.

Best site for variants out there. If someone is interested in playing placement chess (arrange own starting position), let me know.

    Another interesting site is chessvariants.training
