Wiki on hex strategy
  • dj at 2003-10-05

The other thread got to long, SO time to start a fresh.

I once had a math teacher who taught me something very important. His name was Mr Poorman. He taught me that sometimes it takes something being said several times, in diferent ways, usually by different people, before it is even understandable.

That said, I found the template pages at drking.worldonline.co.uk/hex/templates to be a bit terser than I would have liked.

Part of the thing the wiki might do is bring along newbies faster. I have long believed that even the best players today will be considered ameteurish in 10 years.

Someone will say some thing, perhaps as an offshoot that will click in someones mind, and a eureka moment will happen, and a whole new level of hex play will arrive. Individually, we have probably all experienced it. As a group, it might be awesome.

Or, I been smoking the good stuff again….

+1 to dj for his last two posts. This all feels really good. As soon as I get the mailing list going, I will let you know.

I don't think the server part will be a big problem. I am always open to suggestions, and in the absence of such I will simply establish the wiki here in Sweden on some 24/7-available box.

As for the type of platform, I definitely have my preferences. Don't get me started… :)

The mailing list is now up and running, and invitations have been sent out. I'm going to Belgium for a few days and may thus not be overly active on the list, but the others, feel free to start discussing without me. :) I'll catch up.

Anyone who hasn't received an invitation, but would like to, please let me know.

    Over and out. Goodnight.

I have joined the yahoo hex wiki, I have posted a message. Now how do I read messages? Do I klik on something on the hexwiki home page? I cant seem to figure out how to read messages…

It appears the hexwiki group has counterproductive attributes.

It is set up unmoderated. It is also set up so only moderators

can access the archive. If that means email, it is write-

only, and nobody can read anything.

When the list owner gets back, presumably this will get fixed.

  • dj at 2003-10-06

I am assuming Alan is the owner.

I am not sure the yahpoo thing will be the final destination. MaitregsHexClub used to be there. Or so say my old bookmarks.

For pure discussion, this site does as good as we need. But we need more. Much more I think.

Alan mentioned something about Cocoon, which is like HTML, or XML. I am slowly trying to figure it out, but right off the bat it looks like programing to me.

This text/image editor I've been harping about is not a new problem. It has been around since text and images shared the same machine. It is no easy task. If it were, the world would be awash in comic books popped out wily nily.

And School text books would be easy to write, and require little skill other than typing.

If anyone knows of any reasonable program which would allow easy insertion of an image into, or onto a page of text. All major image types should be supported.

I dont see any real need for a database, Kevin has got that covered. Perhaps Kevin would want a link to the wiki, and visa versa once it actually works.

In the meantime, I guess we all explore how things happen at Yahoo, and share that experience here.

The owner, Alan, has slept a few hours and is back in front of the screen. :) I'm still going to Belgium, though, in just a few hours.

I think I fixed the archives access, and I sent out an email about it. My suggestion is that you people already on the list start to introduce yourselves to each other, tell something about your backgrounds and your specific skills, and maybe what you would like to get out of the wiki project.

So what am I going to do in Belgium? Well, I'm actually going to a Cocoon conference! ' Cocoon' is the name of an Apache top project, and this program has grabbed increasingly large slices of my attention for the past eighteen months. In short, it's a servlet for dynamically delivering content on the web. Translated, this means that as the user types an internet web address on her browser, Cocoon makes up the contents on the spot. This is one of the reasons it is so fitting for a wiki, which definitely changes dynamically.

Another reason for me thinking Cocoon is the solution for us is its integrated support for SVG, which I had wanted to learn anyway. SVG is definitely a graphics format on the rise, and this may be the detail that puts HexWiki not only above its counterparts, but in a class for itself. And yes, the files can still be in jpeg even though the format is SVG.

But nothing is set/unchangeable yet. As a dictator in this matter, I hereby grant you all with the power of democracy. :) With that, I bid you a humble goodbye for a few days.

i haven't gotten any email from the mailing list. also, i can't find the club in yahoo's clubs…how do i sign up?

  • dj at 2003-10-06

Nothing much is going on there yet. I am exploring it. I did post my mug there, in case any of you need to know what I look like. Incidently, I cut my own hair.

It seems to be laid out ok, but as yet I have not been able to paste an image inline. I think that will be critical.

I will be trying again tomorrow.

  • Alan Turing at 2003-10-09

The group is now up and running. Anyone who wishes to participate in the discussion about how best to set up the wiki, do message me or reply to this thread.

Btw, in case of any misunderstandings, the group is not the wiki. But you knew that. :)

  • michael at 2003-10-09

Hope you had a nice time in Belgium…Can't wait for you guys to get this thing going. I've read Cameron Browne's book, but i still think i'm missing alot, hope the wiki will cover some of that ;)

  • Alan Turing at 2003-10-09

I did have a nice time in Belgium and at the Cocoon GetTogether, thank you. Also, I've promised those in the group to tell them all about it, and what I did about the wiki while there. :) The 'condition' being that the others in the group start writing a little too, it's been pretty quiet so far, even though we now count 13 members. (Yes!)

  • Alan Turing at 2003-10-09

    14, now. :)

  • dj at 2003-10-10

I am still confused as to just what a wiki is. If I understand it, it would be like a live gameing enviroment. Instead of a game, think perhaps whiteboard. The whiteboard concept is an old one. There might already be many solutions if so.

If anyone knows of any active wiki, preferable one where I might have a clue it would be great to see one in action. So for instance I don't think I could fake my thru a quilt making wiki. Or maybe I could.

  • Dvd Avins at 2003-10-10

A wiki's not a gaming environment, it's a collaborative web site; one where lots of participants develop a body of knowledge.

  • klaashaas at 2003-10-10

An example of seeing wiki's-in-work is http://en.wikipedia.org/

  • Alan Turing at 2003-10-10

Though a wiki is (as stated) not a gaming environment per se, there's really nothing that prevents us from adding playing capabilities to ours. At least not if we write hexwiki from scratch, which shouldn't be very hard.

There's even the possibility of branching games, exploring different paths and strategies collectively, and so on.

Please don't interpret this as an attempt to supplant either lg or ohex. These sites already fill their purpose, and the wiki fills its own.
