In game 34613 I cannot play the word ORDINATELY. I am playing it with a * as ORD*ATELY and golem replies that is not valid. Is it not in the dictionary it uses or is it a probem with how the * works ?

Pandelis, a cube in the hexth dimension.

I searched for the word in the ENABLE dictionary, and it is NOT there.

I searched for the word in all dictionaries, and it is there.

So again, this site uses the ENABLE list - if it is not in there, it will not work on this site.

DICTIONARY SEARCH: - You can search for words in many different dictionaries INCLUDING “Enable Scrabble dictionary” - which is what this site uses. \

    Hope this helps!

    game 37699

virgo not english word, rouged not an english

word,i go to dictionary .com,5 entries for each,

    who is kidding whom ??

Virgo is a proper noun. Who is complaining just for the hell of it?

And if you look closely at the dictionary.com entry when you type in “rouged”, you will see that it's actually the page for “rouge”. The noun “rouge” is a standard English word. The verb form, of which “rouged” is shown as the past tense, is odd enough so that I would not be at all surprised to see it missing fram any given dictionary. The adjective form “rouged” is standard enough so that I would expect to find it almost universally. But it's still not quite standard usage, I believe.

If you want to look up a word - DO NOT USE Dictionary.com

Use a site that has the ENABLE dictionary to search - like this site: http://www.puzzlers.org/secure/wordlists/grepdict.html

You can choose the “Enable Scrabble Dictionary” to see if the word is used here.

WHAT Dictionary.com does for you: All that dictionary.com is set up for is to give you a definition of a word. IT IS NOT used to see if a word is valid or not - the ENABLE Dictionary is!

now that i have cried in my beer ,i need to get back to the game

    thanks for listening !!

dictionary.com is mainly used to help users find a definition for a word.

There will also be times that words will be in the ENABLE dictionary (meaning you can use them in a game), but there will be nothing in dictionary.com about the word.

I know it can be tricky at times - but to make a “word” game, you need to have a big word list. The ENABLE word list that I keep talking about is a free list of words that any site can use free of charge. I believe (but not 100% sure) that if you want other list like the one dictionary.com uses, it cost money to use… if you can use it at all?? But ENABLE word list is free, so that is what this site used!

It works most of the time - just every once and awhile you will gets words that don't match with other dictionarys… :-(

Is anyoe else NOT able to access the site? I tried to use the link BBW supplied, and got an ACCESS DENIED error message.

  • BIG BAD WOLF at 2003-04-05

OK, try this link - I'm not sure why they changed the site around:

    http://www.puzzlers.org/wordlists/grepdict.php

    Hope this helps everyone!

And this is the new direct link to the ENABLE list. It's no longer a download, it's a long text page, which you can save off-line if you want.

This is weird. There has been an update for the enable wordlist, but I find it strange that wetsuit has been removed from the list.

http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/software.html tells that 'The “classic” first edition of ENABLE has now been honorably retired. It is no longer available.'

Richard is using the 'classic' edition. I sinecerely hope he does not change to the upgraded version without prior notice.

I think the best solution would be to make the wordlist used at Little Golem available for download. It is not good that only those of us who downloaded the 'classic' enable wordlist has access to the list.
