Reply to this topic Return to forumDoes any one know any program playing dots and boxes for windows. I would like it to have a decent GUI, and play reasonable strong. Any ideas? Dabble keep crashing on me.
Try this one. I have not tested it very much, maybe it plays strong. http://www.well.com/user/argv/java/dots.html
Here's some Dots and Boxes software requested 7 years ago (!)

And now Ossie has done some serious updating, with this online page -
http://dotsandboxes.org/
which includes in-depth discussion of playing strategy, software development, links, and other stuff. You can also play. The dude must be fond of this game.

Gee, that's unfortunate, FP. If you shoot Ossie an email, he may be able to help you out. He replied to mine. I'm a pretty rudimentary Dots player myself, but was hoping that some of the advanced players here, and software developers, would have a look and let me know what you think. Does Ossie provide some useful information or make some good points under his 'help' tab? (I can barely understand any of the material.) How about his software? Any good?
Over the years, I've obtained lots of good use from his creations: used his alarm clock to wake me up; had lots of fun with his 3D TicTactoe game (solved, of course, but his plays with personality and different levels); used this one in a school program in which I taught a class called 'The Math of Sports and Games'; practiced for FIR games here by using his 'n in a row' program (again - not brilliant, which he admits, but seems to play well and has levels and lots of options); etc. I haven't tried everything, but I believe he has done some nice work. Just curious about other reactions, and hopefully some folks here will get some use and/or enjoyment there.

@FP, one way I found to have it work without the graphics being scrambled is to modify in the settings the line {“NX”:6,“NY”:6,“P”:[“You”,“Me”],“M”… to have a 6x6 board. But it plays really bad even with 10 secs thinking time.
aha! A strong player from here has checked it out. Goody! Not so hot, eh? See, beating me was no big deal; I wanted to see what sort of progress this dude has made. Thanks for info!
